Today's visit to one of our beloved partner schools in South Surrey was a little bit country, a whole lot of adorable, and filled with laughter from start to finish!

Flannel shirts, cowboy boots, overalls, prairie dresses, and some of the cutest little cowboy hats this side of the Fraser! I was absolutely blown away by the outfits, and our colourful farmyard backdrop had the children in stitches! ❤️

Because we don't publicly share photographs of the children we photograph, one of our little cowboys graciously lent us his hat so we could capture a special portrait of the staff room's resident Squishmallow instead. 😂. I've never seen such a dignified Squishmallow before!

I've always believed that early childhood photography should reflect the joy, imagination, and wonderful playfulness of childhood itself.

Happy Thanksgiving! 🍁🧡

I'm feeling especially grateful this Thanksgiving for the beauty of the world around us...and for the amazing families and schools who allow us to celebrate that beauty every day.

This was sunrise yesterday morning. The sun is definitely coming up later and the days are getting shorter, but goodness, these autumn sunrises are spectacular. ❤️

This week also marked the passing of yet another birthday! (Eeeck!)

It was a wonderful work week, with schools in North and South Delta, Vancouver, and Langley on our schedule. I've had the privilege of spending several of my birthdays photographing children at this particular school in Langley, and it's always such a treat.

Sometimes I wonder whether the work we do has a meaningful impact beyond the photographs we create.

And then there are moments like these.

On Monday, a school director told me that a photograph of my family hangs in their office. When families ask who it is, they tell them, "That's our photographer. She's part of our family here."

At my birthday school later in the week, the team surprised me with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. One of the teachers shared with me that a beloved former colleague who had recently moved out east had asked her to pass along birthday wishes.

Despite all the excitement and busy-ness of a cross-country move, they'd still remembered the birthday of a photographer who had been part of their school community for the past few years.

I don't quite have the words to express how much these gestures mean to me.

What began as a photography business has brought so many wonderful people into our lives. Clients have become friends, schools have become communities we look forward to returning to year after year, and we've been given the extraordinary privilege of watching thousands of children grow.

And after a wonderful week at work, we celebrated at home, too — welcoming our son back from his first school trip across the country and later taking the kids to the pumpkin patch for a weekend outing. We probably should have imposed a weight limit on the pumpkins, but watching them work together to wrestle an enormous one into a wheelbarrow was absolutely hilarious. 🎃

My heart is full.

To all the families, educators, and school communities who have welcomed us into your lives, trusted us with your children, and made us feel like part of your families: thank you.

Wishing you all a beautiful Thanksgiving filled with the people and moments that matter most. 🍁❤️

This week marked a pretty incredible milestone for KL Child Photography—we crossed the 10-year mark with the very first of our schools! It has been such a pleasure to photograph generations of children and families there over the years, and I’m so excited to see where the next ten years take us. ❤️

(And a bit stunned to realize that the kids we photographed that first year are now in...secondary school!!)

On a different note, this new backdrop just joined the rotation...and I have a feeling it’s going to be one of our favourites! Look at that gorgeous pop of colour. 😍

Does anyone else ever find themselves in awe of the beautiful environment around us?

I love talking walks in nature whenever I can. Now that it's autumn, sunrise is later and the sun often takes on a much more orange-y autumnal hue than over the summer.

Yesterday awoke with the softest pink and purple sunrise reflecting in the bay. This morning showed up not just with the glowing orange autumn sun, but with the first return of the local bald eagles. (Maybe they've been around, but this was the first one I've seen in the area since late July!). He flew off and over the water as I approached.

So grateful to live in such a stunning place. Anyone else?

There is no session fee, and all prints, digitals and packages will be available for ordering once your gallery is released.

That moment when an email thread from the director of a brand-new school partner starts like this:

"Hi Kirsten,

It was such a wonderful experience yesterday! We all had a great time. Thanks so much to your team for going above and beyond to help us create these special memories. We look forward to seeing the photos. You definitely exceeded our expectations.

Hopefully we will be meeting with you and your team many more times in the coming years! Thanks again for everything and warm regards."

I'm always amazed by the amount we can learn from travel.

Take Sunday, for example.

On Sunday, I learned that you can indeed manage to arrive too early for check-in for BC Ferries.

I also learned on Sunday that the Tsawwassen ferry terminal doesn't have any great places to wait for check-in once you've been ceremoniously kicked out of the waiting line. 😆

But I digress...

Sunday also reminded me - once the delayed ferry before ours actually left and I was safely on board my own ferry with my spot salad in hand - as to how beautiful our province is. Having views like these on our doorstep?

There's a reason why our license plates say "Beautiful British Columbia." I still sometimes pinch myself in disbelief at calling such a stunning place home. Anyone else agree?
..and with that, the 2026-2027 school year has resumed with a set of amazing and dear partner schools out on the island. For some of them, it's our fifth year together...it means a whole cycle of kiddos have come and gone, with younger siblings joining the ranks.

We are so thankful to be up and at 'em for another exciting year.

Happy September!

Is anyone else as surprised as I am that the summer has already passed, and that the new school year is nearly upon us?

As the new school year gets underway, our team is so excited to be heading into another season of photos with so many of our wonderful returning partners...and with a few new ones we’re welcoming this year!

My family's summer was full of...adventure.

We spent a month overseas, which was every bit as wonderful, memorable, chaotic, and exhausting as you might imagine. And somewhere amidst what still feels like nonstop jet lag, I think my greatest achievement may have been surviving a 40-hour travel day across the Pacific with just a 10-year-old and a slightly perplexed Japanese street cat as my travelling companions.

My 10-year-old’s goal was to binge-watch Harry Potter for the entire international flight. Mine was to keep the unhappy cat tucked under the seat in front of me from meowing too much — and to avoid driving the poor guy sitting above him completely crazy.

Neither of us entirely succeeded. Thankfully, we all survived. 😆

That being said, it still was an amazing summer, and also a lovely reminder of how quickly these years move.

As my own kids get older, I find myself appreciating the photographs even more. Childhood changes so quickly, and the older they get, the more I realize how precious it is to capture not just what they looked like, but who they were in that particular moment — the expressions, the curiosity, the little pieces of personality that won’t stay the same for long.

That feeling is what becomes even more poignant as the years pass, and is the essence behind every photo session we capture.

Children grow and change so quickly. The shy preschooler becomes the confident kindergartener. The missing teeth arrive. The curls disappear. Their faces change, their personalities grow, and before we know it, another year has passed.

That’s why we love creating portraits that feel like more than just school pictures.

We want families to look back and remember exactly who their child was at that age.

As we head into another school year, I’m feeling especially grateful for all of the schools and families who continue to trust us with that.

We can’t wait to see so many familiar faces again this fall — and to all of our new schools joining us this year, welcome. We’re so happy you’re here.
