I had the pleasure of sharing a campground with a family of great horned owls. This is one of the three youngsters and if you zoom in you can see the nictitating membrane in action on its eyes.

The nictitating membrane or as most know it, the third eyelid is an added evolutionary protection in many animal species. Humans have them as well though ours are vestigial and remain fixed in the corner of our eyesocket. Apparently we don’t need them, however if you look carefully you may see some of our reptilian politicians third eyelids are in perfect working condition 😉.

I was a little apprehensive to post these shots but I love them. Over the weekend I took some time to hit one of my favourite National parks. I was in a parking pullout when a brown phased mama black bear and her cub came strolling by. It wasn’t long until pandemonium ensued, people parking in the middle of the road and getting out. The worst part was even other professionals with their telephoto lenses getting out and down low onto the road.

I know why they were doing it, so they could get shots at an angle that avoided capturing the edge of the road. As you can see from my shots it wasn’t impossible from in my vehicle and without participating in crowding the two bears though.
So for a moment it was a really nice experience but when it got out of hand I didn’t want to be apart of it anymore and it became really difficult to leave.

It’s exciting to see a bear and sometimes you have to be content with not having anything to share. Earlier in the day I found a massive grizzly while driving but in order for me to get a shot I would have had to be an as***le and block the road and probably get out to get a view of it below the bank, I declined. Seeing him was still awesome! Sometimes you need to just practice some patience and for those with phone cameras, I’m sorry but you’re not going to get that nat geo shot so don’t be an idiot. And for the pros that do the same BS on roadside encounters with bears, you should know better.

Anyway, the Mama was really itchy and found herself a stump to scratch her face and roll around on. Next thing I know the cub is crawling all over her, creating the perfect moment to capture their bond.

As always these photos are genuine moments in time captured by me and not created or enhanced by any AI Bullsh**.

The Moon,

Our nearest and most mysterious celestial neighbour. Never an unwelcome visitor, it has made its way into many photos of mine and it’s lit my way on backcountry hikes many a time. For millennia humans have planned around its phases, used it as an aid for travel and just spent hours gazing up at it. One of the things we’ll always share with our ancestors.

As I post this the crew of Artemis ll are beginning the phase of their journey that takes them around the far side of the moon. In a few short years we might see people walking on the big pizza pie once amore! I find it wild that I was born 20 years after the first manned lunar missions and now I’m in my mid thirties upon the next generation of lunar space travel. Though perhaps we’re not actually going back but finally going…….. 😉.

It’s been a slow start to the year creatively but I’ve been as busy as ever with my construction business. Though these 7 day workweeks might just afford me some time to get lost this summer, we’ll see.

Fortunately a lot of my jobs have been in the countryside lately and with the days slowly getting longer taking the backroads to and from site makes sense again. There must be an irruption of short eared owls this year as this past week has been a gold mine. On numerous occasions I’ve found multiples flying together and most surprisingly in locations many hours apart from each other. Happy

“Lone soldier”

I took this shot a couple years ago in the spring and I never really knew if I’d ever post it but I always liked it. Has a powerful feel to it and seems fitting for today in a melancholy kind of way. Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you with a special someone and an equally happy one to those going it alone….. I mean, I could’ve had a valentine today easily but I didn’t want to break numerous other hearts 🤣.

I came across 6 snowies yesterday on my way home via many rural backroads. One of the most beautiful birds but they are also notoriously skittish. Unlike many other owls where one might be able to sit tight and wait for good shots (if you bait or chase you’re no friend of mine) these guys always stay well enough away. I often find myself stretching the limits of my 100-500 and in desperate want of a 600 f4 and a teleconverter………. Time to buy some more lottery tickets.

About the only thing that excites me for winter anymore is the migration of snowy owls. However, fall and winter as I’ve come to find appear to be the best time to find yet another feathered friend of the owl variety.

With its technical flying prowess and inquisitive facial expressions… Dare I say the short eared owl is the most entertaining of them all to observe?
