An evening with Waterton’s bison herd (captive). It would have been quite the sight to see the huge wild herds that once roamed here with the mountains as a backdrop. Maybe they will again one day.

This past fall was the first time in over a decade that I’d seen river otters in Waterton! It had been so long that I was skeptical of what I was seeing when I first spotted them in the lake from a distance. As they swam closer, their graceful swimming and playfulness became evident and I realized it was a female with two, almost full-grown, pups! It was nice to see them back, hopefully they stick around.

This was the last day in the mountains before the snow hit. A few hours later everything was blanketed in white. It was a day of colour, critters, and crumbling glaciers.

I spent the end of a long day out with this bighorn ram, together watching a grizzly with two cubs crest the ridge below us at sunset. I’m sure these special moments happen all the time, but it’s not often that we get to be there to witness them. One of those soul-filling days in the mountains that I won't forget.

Weasels are difficult to find, and when you do see one, it’s usually only a quick flash as it races around at top speed. Presumably they have to sleep at some point, but I’ve never seen a weasel stay still for more than a couple seconds.

That being said, the other day I found this Long-tailed Weasel stretched out, sleeping in the sun like a house cat. It got up to check me out when I first arrived, and must have determined I wasn’t a threat, as it went right back to the board it was sun-tanning on, and stayed there for the next hour! Even when I went back to work nearby, it just lay there and watched me. Eventually it lifted its head, gave a big yawn, and was gone in the blink of an eye.

This place consistently makes me question if I’m actually a decent photographer or if you can just point your camera in any direction, at any time, and get a good photo!

I’m notoriously slow for posting photos, but here’s another from the incredible solar storm last fall. I wonder if we’ll ever see anything like that again this far south?

Clear skies, great friends, and colourful mountains; toss in some wildlife and that’s pretty much all I need to be happy. Here’s hoping that the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park still feels the same after the current administration is done defunding national parks and increasing border security.

A blissful Great Gray Owl napping in the sun on a warm winter day. It looked so nice that I lay down with my back against a nearby tree and did the same thing. The owl didn’t pay me any attention, and we drifted off to sleep until a raven flew past and gave a deep croak, waking both of us up.
