Snowy Owl @ Brooks, Alberta.

Had a weekend free back in November and .walker.58726 and I went out looking for owls. We didn’t find any at the first spot we looked at but then we decided to check out Brooks.

We found 10 snowy owls on the side of a country road just as we were heading home.

Western Screech Owl, Lethbridge Alberta.

Finally got a glimpse of this Western Screech owl after hearing rumours of it in Lethbridge. I tried a couple of times to see them in Waterton with no luck.

It roosts in the middle of a suburb and is not always there.

Snowy Owl, Vauxhall Alberta.

On Saturday we went looking for the Snowy Owls again at the spot we saw them the previous week. We started around 6am since the spot was about an hour and forty minutes away from Lethbridge.

We didn’t see them at the exact spot but found them a bit before where we saw the owls from the previous week.

Found a group of Snowy Owls last week while driving around. First sightings for the season!
walker.58726 and I were searching near Vauxhall, AB since a couple of individuals were sighted in the area the previous day.

We had no luck near Vauxhall but then decided to head elsewhere based on sightings from December 2022 submitted on eBird.

We were heading back from the spot from the old reports when found a group of 10. This was taken around midday.

Mount Rundle and Vermilion lake last week.

We got the first snowfall/ flurries of the season last weak. Although only brief, it accumulated nicely on the peaks.

Luckily the roads were not too icy the next day, I still had my summer tires on!

Burrowing Owl @ Grassland National Park, Saskatchewan.

Burrowing owls are a migratory that normally visit Canada in the summer. They typically nest in abandoned Gopher and Ground Hogs in the Prairies.

In Canada they are considered endangered with a small and spread out population in BC (around Kamloops and Kelowna), Alberta and Saskatchewan. There were almost no sightings last summer around Lethbridge so I decided to visit Grassland National Park to see them.

Ended up seeing a total of 8 adult owls and 7 juveniles. This was taken early morning through very dense fog. The fog was very dense and despite this owl being 10m from me, you nearly could see it.

One surprising thing about this owl was that its nest was right next to the road.

Family of Great Horned owls @ Coaldale ,Alberta.

The Birds of Prey Foundation in Coaldale set up a few nest sites in the conifer trees around the ponds on the north side of Coaldale.

This particular nest site has been used by a pair of Great Horned owls for the last 8 years with every year having a successful nest despite it being right next to a road.

I spent a few weeks watching these baby owls grow up and fledge. It was amazing to see these owls on almost a daily basis.

Hopeing for them to return next year!

Taken with nikon D500 and Nikon 200-500mm lens and a Manfrotto video head tripod.
