Earlier this week, I finally had a chance to pop out and hop into my friend The Fishing Doctors Adventures' boat for a morning of salmon fishing just outside of the Fraser River mouth. This September fishery is often highly productive because several stocks of chinook salmon overlap in the area. The fish are actively bulking up some more before travelling up the Fraser, so the bite can be hot at times. The wind made this particular trip a little more challenging, but we still got it done. Both red and white chinook salmon were caught, and the hatchery coho salmon was a bonus that we didn’t really expect. The ticket was trolling anchovies around 50 feet below the surface.

The day didn’t end once we were off the boat, we wanted to preserve the trip, and our catches. With five salmon in the bag, we delivered them to St. Jean's Cannery & Smokehouse so they could be processed into a variety of products including smoked and canned salmon. St Jean’s is BC’s last working canneries, family owned since 1961. I have enjoyed their products for many years now, but never tried having my own catches processed so I’ve been looking forward to this.

The fish were dropped off at their Delta location, which is just a short drive from where we pulled out the boat in Ladner. We chose to have our white chinook salmon made into candied salmon and hot smoked salmon, as well as lox from our red chinook and coho salmon. I can’t wait to pick these up later this season, stay tuned for the YouTube episode!

If you are considering having your own catches processed by St Jean’s, you should check out http://sport.stjeans.com for more information.

If you are in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley this weekend, and looking for a fun fishing event, then you should check out Fred's Custom Tackle's 3rd annual Slammin' Salmon. Beside the two-day chinook salmon fishing derby on the Chilliwack/Vedder River, there will be lots of activities happening at the Chilliwack store location. A sale will also be happening at the store, and many prizes are to be grabbed by participants. More importantly, this is a fundraising event. Once again Fred has stepped up to be the leader of this recreational fishing community, raising tens of thousands of dollars which will go toward important initiatives such as habitat restoration and providing a voice for anglers. Good luck to those who take part in the derby, surely there will be some fine specimens caught this weekend.

A pair of fine salmon intercepted at the start of their freshwater migration in the Chilliwack River. Both fish originated from the hatchery, but are they the same species? What are they? Let's see your answers and reasonings. 😁

Yesterday, while out fishing with The Fishing Doctors Adventures, we caught a mix of both red and white chinook salmon which isn't unusual for this time of the year. Some people claim that there are no difference between the two, while others detest the smell of white chinook salmon. I personally think they both can be good for eating, but I prepare them differently. Are you team red or team white, or are you on both teams?

City of Chilliwack has been busy digging! Those Prime Lures Glory spoons will not stand a chance in these newly dug ponds when coho salmon start filling them up next month. 😅

Have you had a chance to get out to the Fraser River mouth for some chinook salmon fishing. This fishery can be highly productive throughout September as several chinook salmon runs overlap when they make their way into the Fraser. You have a chance of getting into some Shuswap bound red chinook salmon, as well as those bigger white chinook salmon that are heading into Chilliwack and Harrison River. Here is an old episode showing how chaotic it can get once you are out there at the right tide. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUzzrrSyCE4

Happy Labour Day long weekend everyone. It's hard to believe that summer has already flown by. I hope you've had a chance to experience some excellent salmon fishing that BC has to offer in the past few months. Time to switch gear and enjoy some river fishing in the next couple of months.
