Ashley Marston Photography Birth, Lifestyle, Documentary Photography & Films

Love and laughter comprise the primary subject matter for
Vancouver Island-based birth and lifestyle photographer Ashley
Marston. An award-winning documentary photographer (and busy
mother of three with her supportive husband John), Marston
strives for images that capture those two staples of family
relationships, as well as the quiet moments that might otherwise
go unseen. Always seeing life thro

ugh a lens, Marston also
photographs her own family daily, cherished images she shares
on Facebook through her year-long A Daily Occurence project. Whether the photographs capture moments with her family or a
client, storytelling is the heart of all her work.

I’ve counted. And with all the kids coming and going over the next week we only have one more day together as a family of five.

This summer we’ve settled into a beautiful place where the kids have connected beautifully as ‘older kids’.

Dinner times are my favorite.

Often we’ve got hands helping with dinner or extra kids around the table.

The conversations usually leading into something wildly inappropriate and totally hilarious.

It’s nice when they linger. I know we are doing the right thing when no one is jumping up from the table to leave, to hang around just a little longer and see where to conversation leads before I announce who’s on dish duty that night 😉

I love taking them all in together like this and then John says “Look at them. Would you just look at ‘em” ❤️❤️

When I had a last minute spot open up this summer and the Lee Family snatched it up quick it was hard to play it cool with one of my all time favorite families.

It’s been a little while since I’ve seen them (they’ve been busy growing! 🥹)

It took only about half a second for me to fall in love with Deb’s laugh and Logan’s cheeky sense of humor all over again.

The kids. Gorgeous. A perfect blend of their incredible parents, no surprises there ❤️

Love ya Lees’ !!
Next time not so long, hey?! 😉❤️

On Saturday my niece Destiny married Reuben.

Some of my favorite moments were my sister in law Karen and her tears of joy throughout the day.
The traditional blanketing ceremony, the beautiful florals my nieces worked tirelessly to create, the words in Reuben’s vows that said “No matter where we are in the world, if we are together I feel at home.” And the tears coming down Destiny’s cheek as she read hers.

Cousins coming together, all of them for the first time in years and a reception filled with love against the backdrop off a storming sky ⚡️❤️

Ok so maybe it’s time for a re introduction ❤️

I’m Ashley.
My husband John and I are raising three incredibly unique humans and for a whole decade I photographed them and our family every day as part of a 365 Project I called “A Daily Occurrence”.

A unique fact about our family is that we are a TWO ARTIST household.

John is a Coast Salish Master Carver.
Brilliant, talented… and handsome 😉
(pssst follow him here John Marston 👈🏼)

People often will ask me what I shoot as a professional photographer
My answer is always this :
I capture people, love and connection in all its capacity.
As a birth photographer I often start at the beginning, and then sometimes my work brings me near the end of life and love.
I am humbled and honored that families ask me to be with them where love begins and then as a chapter closes and all the beauty of the in-between.

Thanks for being here ❤️

*pictured here is a recent family portrait taken at my nieces wedding, perfectly VOUGE styled by my niece, against the backdrop of floral’s brilliantly put together by… you guessed it… my nieces (did I mention the whole Marston Family is ridiculously talented, I just married into it 😉 🤣)

At the end of a 9 hour wedding shift multiple guests came up to me and encouraged me to head outside with my camera.

Those of you who have shot a full day wedding will know that when I you put your camera away at the end of the night nothing short of a meteorological phenomenon will make you pull it back out again 🤣

But there I was, standing under the gazebo my niece was just married under with a tripod and “how to photograph lightning storms” typed into my phone…

And this is what I got ⚡️

I won’t be storm chasing in my future but im thrilled with the experience we don’t see very often on Vancouver Island 🌩️

“We all felt relaxed with you in our home and despite this being our first family session with you, somehow it felt as natural as something we do every year.
Thank you again for everything.
You captured a beautiful warmth in that evening”

That’s all I need ❤️

A little something special for the Purves Family tonight ❤️

Clay and I graduated together and everytime his daughter Ruby flashed that cute grin at me all I saw was a 15 year old Clayton in the hallways of Chemainus Secondary School smiling at everyone who crossed his path.

It’s always nice to catch up, see that he hasn’t lost his sense of humor, that his kids are great and he has a lovely wife that perfectly matches all that Deeble energy ❤️

The kids graciously put up with me and I believe the last thing I said to Reece was to “keep it in his pants” before I turned and sped off in my car….

The families I see yearly for my Day in the Life sessions receive a time capsule of their days are unlike anything else.

Some years, these families take me on adventures. And other years, we simply capture the beautiful simplicity of home.

It’s those days at home that resonate with me most as a mother and as a documentarian.

Because it’s a record.
A timestamp.
A visual diary of your children, literally growing up in your home, in front of your very eyes.

Countertops they once ran underneath.
Cupboards they couldn’t reach before.
The changing landscape of their bedrooms year after year….

All seen, all captured ❤️
