A Lesson in Trust

Sometimes it is the tiniest of wildlife that brings the biggest smile. Earlier this summer I was walking along a stream photographing songbirds and flowers when I noticed a mother mallard and her little ones floating along with the current, feeding in the shallow pools. She seemed cautious of me, so I kept my distance, never wanting to disturb or stress a mother with her young.

After a few hours in the area and seeing the family every so often, I began making my way back to the truck. As I headed upstream, I noticed the family was also moving in that direction. I sat down in a shaded area to rest and after about ten minutes, they seemed to become comfortable with me sharing their habitat, realizing I was no threat.

Then Mom led the way across a small pond, walked onto the bank beside me and began feeding on the fresh grasses. The little ones climbed onto a stone, seemingly curious about what I was all about.

Moments like this are what make being in nature so special. It is not always wildlife encounters with wolves, grizzlies or cougars that stay with you. Sometimes it is simply being trusted and accepted into a small moment in the lives of a mother and her young.

When Powers Meet- The Boss

Watching water being naturally funnelled by the narrowing banks of a stream or the shallowing of its bed reveals just how powerful nature can be. As I reflect on watching Grizzly Bear 122 at different water crossings, I’m reminded that even with all his strength and power, he knows the safest places to cross through instinct and experience. He approaches each crossing with respect and caution, recognizing another force of nature that is bigger than him.

I often think that because of his age and the countless distances he has travelled, The Boss may know the rugged landscapes of Banff National Park better than any living thing, including humans.

Today is International Wolf Day and a day where I think about the different experiences I’ve had over the years with these special animals. Even as a very young kid I was always intrigued and never felt threatened sharing the outdoors in their presence. Looking back, I realize how fortunate I have been sharing many moments that will be forever in my memory.

A Wolf’s Peace

This young female I saw for the first time as a growing pup with the security and comfort of her littermates and mom nearby. Now, over a two day period watching as she rested and played in a meadow of wildflowers, she appeared content being alone. Showing signs of maturing into a confident wolf.

I believe a wolf’s biggest fear, just like humans is being alone, but over time they become more at peace with it.

Few animals have captured the hearts quite like Grizzly Bear 122, known as The Boss. Every encounter with this legendary grizzly is a reminder that Canada’s greatest treasures are often found in its wild places.

The Boss has become an icon of our Canadian Rockies. It is an honour to witness and photograph such an incredible bear in his natural home.

Mountains and Treasures wishes everyone a wonderful Canada Day filled with gratitude and appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Happy Canada Day!
