The Punk Rock Duck

Meet the Red-breasted Merganser. If birds had a punk band, this drake would be the lead singer. That slicked-back crest, the blood-red eye, and an attitude that says “I own this lake”.

Getting this shot was like trying to photograph a submarine with a mohawk. Mergansers are fast, skittish, and spend half their time underwater. The trick? Get low. Like, embarrassingly low. I’m talking chin-in-the-mud, elbows-soaked, “is that a leech on my arm?” low. But when the golden light wraps around that iridescent green head and the background melts into warm butter... you forget about the cold entirely.

This is why I do what I do. Nature doesn’t perform on command. You show up, you wait, you earn the moment. And sometimes, just sometimes, a merganser gives you a four-second gift that makes the whole morning worth it.

Have you ever seen one of these in the wild? Drop a comment and tell me where. And if you’ve never heard of a merganser before today, welcome to the obsession.

City Lights, Wild Nights

The city thinks it owns the night. Lights draped across the horizon like a velvet rope at some exclusive venue. Nobody told this Mute Swan it wasn’t on the guest list.
While the city slept, this swan glided through the golden reflections like royalty walking through a ballroom that was built just for them. No invitation needed. No ticket required. Just show up and own the water.

I was lying at water level, lens barely above the surface, watching the city blur into bokeh while the swan slowly floated by. That’s the thing about wildlife photography. You can plan your settings, scout your location, set up in the dark. But the moment? The moment is a gift. You don’t take it. You receive it.

Have you ever spotted wildlife doing something unexpected in an urban setting? Drop your story below. I want to hear it.

The King of Spring

This Wild Turkey tom was in full strut, putting everything he had into his performance. Bronze feathers fanned like a living sunburst. Head blazing red and blue.
I had hiked up to this clearing an hour before dawn. Managed to get my chair blind set up on the edge of the field just before it started raining.
I was hidden, freezing and completely still. It was raining off and on and my heart was pounding as he strutted in front of me for a full 15 minutes.

Nature, the ultimate spirit lifter.
I’ll find the wild so you can find the joy.

If you know what to look for, you can be ready for when it happens. The circling flight of the gull rapidly changes and often there’s a slight upward motion as the gull puts the air brakes on and its head and eyes are transfixed on the water surface below.
There’s a split second when a gull commits to the water. Wings full, head locked, eyes fixed on the surface below.

I shot this head-on from up on the riverbank.

This wasn’t the first frame. Or the fifteenth. But when I saw it, I knew. That feeling is the reason I lie in the mud at 6 AM.

Would you hang this on your wall? Tell me in the comments.

Nature, the ultimate spirit lifter.

Golden Hour Confidence

There’s a moment in wildlife photography that no amount of planning can guarantee. You can scout the location, set up before dawn, cover yourself in camo netting, and lie flat on a mat at the edge of a pond. You spot the ducks in the distance and lie there thinking “Please come a little closer”.

This Hooded Merganser did exactly that. Just after sunrise, with golden light painting the water behind it, this male cruised in close with his crest fully fanned.

Lying at water level changes everything. It turns the pond into a mirror and puts you inside the bird’s world instead of looking down at it. The compression of a super telephoto lens melts the reflections in the background into a wash of warm amber and copper.

This is why I do this. Not just for the photo, but for the privilege of being trusted by a wild animal, even briefly.

Have you ever seen a Hooded Merganser in the wild? Tell me about it below.

They’re just jealous ‘cause they can’t fly
