August 13, day 4 of our Icefall Lodge three hut traverse. We hiked 8 km to the Kirwan Hut which stunned us because of the spectacular scenery. There were 6 giant waterfalls tumbling into a dead-end valley (called a cirque). I was speechless when I first saw it. Our trail was washed out by a landslide so we had to scramble across a deep gully. I will let the photos and video speak for themselves.

Here is an album of our hike from the Icefall Lodge to a glacier at 2393 m. Like to get your comments.

We went on a helicopter camping trip at the Icefall Lodge which is located just outside of the Banff National Park boundary. We went for a 3 hut traverse going from the Rostrum Hut, to the Icefall Lodge, then to the Kirwan Hut. The area is spectacular with wild flowers, glaciers, ice caves, and alpine lakes. Here are photos from day 1, August 10. More will follow.

Meteor shower on August 11 and 12. I was staying at the Icefall Lodge in BC. It was very smoky due to the forest fire, we can't even see the mountains across the valley. But earlier that day on August 11, it rained and the sky became clear. For about one hour between 1 and 2 am on August 12, the sky was relatively clear so I set up my camera and took photos every 30 seconds. I stopped when the clouds came in. After processing the photos at home, I found 5 meteors in my photo taken on the night of August 11 (precisely the early morning of August 12). Then on the night of August 12, I took photos between 10:30 and 12 pm and also captured 5 meteors before the clouds came in. Hope you enjoy these photos. There was also a weak aurora that appeared as a red glow to the north.

As soon as people mention the Great Wall, people automatically would relate that to the Badaling Great Wall northwest of Beijing. It is the most famous, most accessible, most photographed section of the 21,000 km wall. On July 7, 2026, I visited a section of the Great Wall north of Beijing that is called Jiankou Great Wall. It is not maintained, no regulated, "not opened" to the public. Part of it is so steep that it is close to 90 degrees (vertical). There were many warning signs telling the public not to climb. I went alone and did not encounter another person. When I climbed to the top of a near vertical section, I was scared and wondered how I would go down. It is not for the average tourist. Hope you enjoy these photos and videos. A friend drove me there from the heart of Beijing and it took about 2.5 hours.

Ice Cave, Shanxi Province, China, July 5, 2026. It is the most stunning site that I have visited. It was +30 C outside, but inside the natural cave, it was -10 C. I saw icicles and ice columns. This cave has been around for 3 million years old. Near the summit of this mountain is a coal seam that has been burning for hundreds of years. Heat from this burning coal created a convection and draws cold air into the cave and pushes hot air up. This air flow keeps the ice cave cold all year round so it will not melt.
