Spotted! A Spotted Tohwee in Fish Creek park. I was very excited to come across my third lifer in only nine days last night. We could hear this bird many times before we actually spotted it in the trees. Although it is not a rare bird per se, it is uncommon in this area and very difficult to find. It’s been a good Birding week for me!

How many ducks would a Wood Duck chuck if a Wood Duck could chuck ducks? This Wood Duck in Inglewood Bird Sanctuary looks like he just stepped out of the bath! Not sure I’ve ever seen a bird so disheveled!

The way this little Saw-whet Owl moved its head had me mesmerized! I could have sat with this beauty for hours just watching and waiting for moments like these. I don’t like using “its” when I am posting about birds, as I always try to educate and highlight the difference between males and females. However, with these owls, it is very hard to tell the male and female apart as they are very slightly different sizes with the female being larger. I believe this is a female, as it is very close to the juvenile I found last week, but there is no way to be sure. Either way - this is one of my favourite owls I’ve ever encountered!

The Blue Morpho Butterfly is one of my favourite living things to see in the forest. Although not exceedingly rare, they are facing threats so seeing one is always a pleasure. They have one of the largest wingspans of allbutterflies at 6 inches, which makes them easier to spot! But for some reason, they are very hard to photograph as they flit around, often landing and closing their wings immediately.
