📸 Some moments only happen once. Are you ready to capture them?

This Saturday i'll be working with a student who has been asked to photograph a baptism of a friend's baby. We've been given permission to practice right in the sanctuary so she can feel confident about knowing how to shoot the exact location she'll be in.

A baby's baptism is one of those special occasions filled with faith, family, tradition and emotion.

But photographing a baptism can be challenging. Churches are often dimly lit, the ceremony moves quickly, and you can't exactly ask the priest to pour the water a second time because you missed the shot! 😊

We've put together a practical guide to help you capture these moments with confidence.

You'll learn:
✅ Camera settings for challenging church lighting
✅ Which lenses work best
✅ When to use (and avoid) flash
✅ The key moments of a traditional Catholic baptism
✅ A complete photography shot list so you don't miss those important moments

Whether you're photographing your first baptism or simply want to improve your skills, this guide is for you.

Some moments in life are simply extraordinary.

Like watching a bear wander along a river in the Canadian wilderness. Then suddenly dive into the river to come up with his/her next meal.

But those moments don't wait for us to figure out our camera settings.

At Learn Photography Canada, our photography escapes are about more than taking pictures. It's about experiencing life and being ready to capture the moments that matter.

Live the Moment. Don't Miss the Shot.

Because the moment won't wait.

‚Me Time‘. Snapped this image yesterday at the Banff Springs hotel. It truly hi-lights the benefit of some me time for each of us especially in the midst of an amazing conference empowering connections and community. Light means nothing without dark and I love the way they intermingle in this space. Have a great Friday!

It is with a mixture of emotions that I announce that Leonardo DeGorter, a long time coach for Learn Photography Canada in Vancouver is stepping down from his role in order to fully pursue his passion for photojournalism.

I am sad to see him go. I’ve so appreciated Leonardo for his commitment to LPC, his students , their success and delivering material in a way that students could understand. His students reviewed him as knowledgeable, caring and kind.

I know him as detailed, caring and loyal. I appreciate all those things about him. He is a great coach and has become a great friend.

I am excited for the photojournalism opportunities to come because i know that is his heart and I want nothing but the best for this man.

Leonardo: Thank you for who you are. This is not a goodbye but rather a transition to the Learn Photography Canada Community becoming your cheer squad on the sidelines: thrilled to watch what lies in store for you.

You realize what you focus on. Annie Leibovitz is an excellent example of that.

1. She found her direction by following an interest. She enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute in 1967 to become a painter. It led to being exposed to Photography and she quickly changed her major.

2. She imagined an image before it existed. Her famous image of John Lennon curled up against Ono the morning of the day he was shot was not random. She had an image of intimacy in her mind before she entered the shoot.

3. She developed the discipline to make her vision real. Her early experiences taking spontaneous shots started to build vision for what was possible and what she dreamed of creating and she focused on making that happen. She turned the accidental into the intentional.

Those 3 choice are available to all of us today. The choice to focus on what you find important is something no-one can stop you from doing unless you let them.

So my encouragement to you is to follow your heart: start focusing on the things that interest you. The journey of simply following will create learnings (happy accidents and painful ones) that will narrow your focus. You'll encounter millions of things that will try to distract you on the path: Learn to say no to them.

This store window image in Gastown I took on the recent Learn Photography Canada Street Stories Photography Escape is a reminder that the best way to success is through identifying a passion and following through on it. When you do what you love and love what you do there is no such thing as 'work'.

Can't wait to see the stories we uncover during our upcoming Street Stories Escape to Quebec City next February for Carnaval.

The Race

We all run one in life. That is what i saw when i captured this image near Vancouver's English Bay during the recent Vancouver Street Stories Escape I led.

I also felt the rocks. Life isn't always easy but I've learned to appreciate the rocky patches because with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight they are what have built my strengths.

It may sound crazy but if you are in a rocky patch of life: embrace it.

It will pass and if you let it .. it will make you stronger.

One of the benefits of our student community is that we all see things different and if you want your creativity to increase, to be able to 'see' photographs better the answer isn't in striving to do so.. that only makes it worst. Come take a workshop, hang out with our community and watch as what you see naturally starts to expand.

A Picture Says a Thousand Words. But Are They Telling YOUR Story?

While walking through Gastown in Vancouver recently leading the Learn Photography Canada Vancouver Street Stories Photography Escape, I came across this scene in a local barbershop.

A young boy watching his father get his hair cut. I loved the moment and couldn't resist capturing it.

But the more I looked at the image, the more I realized how many different stories this one photograph could tell.

Story #1: Cute – Lets face it. The little guy is adorable! His long locks, his little plaid shirt, and the way he is watching Dad.
Story #2: Father/Son – A beautiful reminder of the connection between generations. A little boy watching, learning, and perhaps imagining the man he will one day become.
Story #3: Growing Up – I love the contrast in hairstyles. The young boy with his long, carefree locks and Dad with his short, neatly trimmed hair. To me, its almost symbolic of the journey from childhood freedom to the responsibilities that come with adulthood.

And I'm sure you could look at this same photograph and find another story entirely.

Which brings me to something I believe every business owner, marketer, and corporate communications professional should consider.

We've all heard the old adage, A picture says a thousand words.

But here's the thing: Are those thousand words supporting the story you WANT your brand to tell?

Too often, businesses select images simply because they're attractive, professional, or fill an empty space on a website, brochure, or social media post. But great photography should do so much more.

It should communicate your values. Create an emotional connection. Build trust. Help people see themselves in your story.

The most powerful brand images don't just show people what you do. They help people understand WHO you are and WHY you matter.

So here's my question for you: How well do the images you use help you tell YOUR story?Id love to hear your thoughts!
