Up at 4 AM, camera in hand, and nearly 8 hours wandering Kolkata’s streets and markets. Raw, chaotic, unforgettable… still one of my favourite places to photograph.

I met 12-year-old Sonam while walking through the village of Lungthang in Tibet back in 2005. With the help of my guide and interpreter, Tsering Phackmo, we began talking.

Sonam introduced me to one of the village elders and later invited me into the home she shared with her grandmother, Lhakpa. Over yak butter tea, they spoke about daily life in this remote part of Tibet and some of the realities of living in such an isolated and demanding landscape.

It was a brief encounter, but one that offered a valuable glimpse into life in Lungthang through the people who called it home.

For a moment, color gathers in petals, leaves, forests, and crowded markets before it begins to fade. These photographs witness that fleeting intensity, when the world feels most alive, abundant, and impossible to hold. Photography cannot stop color from disappearing. It can only remember that it was here. 🌸

Last week, I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Thrangu Monastery Canada 加拿大創古寺 and spend time with Dunsey Lama Pema Rinpoche.

It was a very special moment for me to personally share a copy of The Valley Knows Her Name with Lama Pema. Born in Tsum Valley and deeply connected to education and the Himalayan community, Lama Pema is also the brother of Pasang Lama, a spiritual leader of Tsum whose support and connection to Tsum have been an important part of our journey.

Our hope has always been that this book can do more than preserve and share the stories of Tsum. We hope it can also give something back to the community that welcomed us so generously and help support the next generation through education.
