I’ve been told some version of this in almost every job I’ve ever had.

Don’t get too attached. Don’t get too invested. Maintain professional distance.

Ironically, my mom has been told the same thing throughout her career too. We form relationships with the people we work with. We remember them. We worry about them. We care about what happens to them after our part in their story is technically over.

For a long time, I thought maybe that meant I wasn’t very good at being “professional.”

But I don’t think that anymore.

I believe deeply in professionalism. I believe in showing up prepared, communicating clearly, respecting people’s time, doing what I said I would do, and delivering work I’m proud of.

I just don’t believe any of that requires distance.

Especially in photography.

You invite me into some of the most intimate days of your lives. I meet your parents and your grandparents. I learn who your people are. I hear the complicated family dynamics. I know who we need to make sure gets photographed. I see you when you’re overwhelmed, nervous, crying, laughing, exhausted, completely in love.

How could that not be personal?

I care about the photographs, deeply. But I also care about what happens in between them. I care whether you feel safe with me, whether you can breathe when I walk into the room, whether your family feels seen, and I care that when I put my camera down, I was someone you were glad was there.

Eventually my job is finished. The gallery is delivered. The contract is complete.

But I’ve come to believe that our lasting impact on people is actually very simple: how we made them feel.

So maybe I care too much.

I think I’m okay with that.

A little dawsha, a lot of love. 🤍🇵🇸

Dalia + Yousif’s day was loud, joyful, emotional, and so full of family and culture.

And then there was the rain... SO much rain. I kept saying that it was like the Falastini version of the Notebook.

But there’s something I’ve learned about rainy wedding days: the pauses always seem to come exactly when you need them. Somehow we got just enough time for the zaffe, then to run outside, wander through the gardens, and even caught a few minutes of the most beautiful golden light.

From the zaffe at Dalia’s family home, to the dabke, the keffiyehs, the laughter, the hugs, and a room full of people ready to celebrate them; there was so much life in this day.

Dalia + Yousif, I will never forget this one.

Allah ybareklkom 🤍

Erica + Steve

An evening in Liberty Village, no big production, just a first look, a walk through the neighbourhood, a drink at the bar, and the two of them somewhere in between it all 🤍

The first days are beautifully ordinary.

Long mornings on the couch, tiny fingers wrapped around yours, sleepy stretches, feeding at all hours… staring at this beautiful little human that changed everything.

Your home doesn’t look perfect, it’s lived in and it’s loved.

That is what is worth remembering 🤍

I’m not trying to create memories that look like everyone else’s, I’m trying to preserve the ones that already belong to you.

The house you brought them home to, the chaotic rhythm you’re trying to settle in to, and the little reminders of what it really looked and felt like on the beginning.

Some weddings stay with you.

I’ve known SPIN El Poeta for a couple of years, so I expected his vows to be beautiful. I didn’t expect them to leave an entire room sobbing.

The weather tried everything it could that day, but for thirty minutes the rain stopped, the light softened, and we were given this.

Sometimes that’s all you need.

Congratulations my friends, may you be eternally blessed 🤍
