CANADA: I feel like I've been at work for an eternity, so I'm pumped to get back to BC and hang out with these wee mites in a couple of weeks. This is the smallest hummingbird in Canada - the calliope (kal-eye-oh-pee) hummingbird weighing in at only TWO POINT FIVE GRAMS! An NZ 10 cent coin weighs 3.3 gm and Canadian 5c coin weighs 3.9 gm - for context. They're smaller and less aggressive than the more prevalent rufous hummingbird with the orange throat sparkles (gorget) so finding this little territory with a regular few calliopes had me ecstatic and I even put this tiny friend into my 2026 calendar because I love them so much. Getting a picture of them is extremely difficult because they fly SO fast and usually when they do stop for a break, it's on top of the tallest tree around, making for sh*tty photos. I spent forever staring at a patch of flowers waiting for this moment and felt extremely privileged to come away with the shot.

CANADA: I haven't done very much shooting in Canada in the last couple of years, but one of my favourite things to do when I'm home is sit for hours and photograph the dragonflies in flight. It's mostly just super frustrating in the beginning, but once you start to learn their rhythms it becomes a little easier and a lot more fun. This is a type of mosaic darner - the species I'm not sure of (please ID on my iNat if you know it!). They're quite large and aerial hunters, picking off almost any soft-bodied flying insect for lunch.

MONGOLIA: Three pallas' cat kittens with the zoomies. Despite having an absolute rager while Mum was out hunting, the faces of these cats are always comically expressionless. They would tear around like absolute units and when Mum did come home with her hard earned kills, they would just bat them around and throw them in the air before leaving them lying around. Mum would always do a sweep before bedtime and pick everything up, eat it or leave it for the kids somewhere though. I could sit and watch these tiny dorks forever.

MONGOLIA: I normally really dislike having human elements in my photos, but at the end of a trip to Mongolia, I captured something I was SO excited about that's made me break my rules. This mother wolf spider appeared on the wall of our Ger (traditional Mongolian tent) which was lined with pretty fabrics, the weave of which you can see she's sitting on. She was super chill, just moving about her world carrying her 100-300 kids on her back like an absolute trooper. Needless to say I didn't throw her out on the streets and she was welcome to chill in our Ger as long as I was able to lie to my roommate about having put her outside, heh. Happy belated mothers day to all the spiders out there lugging around 300 babies (and my mum of course).

CANADA: These enormous, pink-faced friends are turkey vultures, the cleaner-uppers of the animal kingdom, picking away at the already deceased. They have an incredible sense of smell, which they use to find the carrion (dead animal) in the first place. My favourite fact about them though, is their defence reaction is to vomit on the creature that gets too close. Given what they eat, I think they hit the nail on the head with that one.

MALAYSIA: On one of many night walks on our recent southeast asia trip, we found this absolute chonker of a caterpillar. It was about as long as my index finger and twice as fat and when it grows up will turn into an atlas moth. You may think this is a huge caterpillar, but the moth it's morphing into can potentially have a wingspan of up to 35cm!!

MADAGASCAR: There were lots of amazing endemics on my target list for Madagascar, but the frogs they have there are SO stunning they were pretty high on that list. This is Mantella baroni and is not a poison dart frog - as you may think. Due to Madagascar's isolation, convergent evolution has resulted in these beautiful frogs looking similar and being poisonous but actually being really distantly related. Interestingly, if you find them in captivity, they usually aren't poisonous because they're not eating their wild diet of ants and mites which is where the accumulation of toxins begins. This tiny friend was about the size of the tip of my thumb and surprisingly hard to see in the mud for such a vibrant lil dude.

CANADA: I can hear this little cutie outside my window right now and they'll be back to their shy ways pretty soon, so here's a winter photo when they decide they aren't shy for a few weeks and chilled in my tree. It's a varied thrush and they have a really pretty song, kind of like a mellow, high pitched train whistle. Interestingly, I've had one or two at my house in the winter every year, fluffed up sitting in a similar spot. I thought they were probably the same individuals all these years, but I just learned the oldest known varied thrush was only 4, so maybe part of the same family tree? It's always fun to wonder.

THAILAND: Walking up the many steps of a temple grounds to the view at the top, there are usually lots of cool things to find along the way, like this longhorn beetle. It wasn't all that big - maybe the length of my thumbnail, just pretty cool looking. So I took a few shots and we carried on. It wasn't until I looked back at the shots that I realised how fuzzy furry it was!

CANADA: I had only ever seen one northern hawk-owl in my life and that was while I was away at work in northern Alberta, it was a dot on the top of a tall tree, far away. Last month, my total sightings went through the roof as we saw over 50 of them throughout the week while looking for lynx. Some were for sure the same birds we passed more than once, but over 50 sightings was not something I was expecting!! These guys are unlike most other owls and oddly diurnal, meaning they are active and hunting in the daytime. This one had just finished a small rodent meal and was outta there.
