There’s something incredibly addicting about film photography.

No screen. No instant review. No way to know if you nailed the shot or completely missed it until days later. Every frame is a gamble, and honestly, that’s what keeps pulling me back.

These images were captured on a 1977 Minolta XD7 that I personally restored and brought back to life. Going into this roll, I wasn’t entirely sure whether any issues would come from the camera… or from the person behind it. Thankfully, it looks like I’ve finally got everything dialed in.

Watching these negatives come back and seeing the results for the first time was a rewarding feeling. This camera sat silent for decades, and now it’s creating photographs again.

This is Part 1 of 2. More images coming soon.

Which shot is your favourite? Comment below!👇

I present to you a set of photographs captured on a camera that’s over 100 years old.

For this roll, I loaded the Kodak No. 2 Folding Autographic Brownie with ILFORD HP5 Plus 400 black & white film. Just 8 exposures… 8 chances to get it right.

Using a camera like this makes you appreciate how different photography once was. There’s no autofocus, no image stabilization, no screen to review your shots, and very few controls. Every frame requires a little patience and a little faith.

When I got the film back, I quickly learned my first lesson: this camera has a minimum focusing distance of about 8 feet. Anything closer than that? Soft and blurry. A detail I probably should have checked beforehand… but that’s part of the fun of shooting vintage cameras. Every roll teaches you something new.

My second lesson was just how steady photographers had to be a century ago. With no stabilization of any kind, even the slightest movement can affect a photograph. Next time, the tripod is definitely coming along.

What makes this camera especially meaningful is that it’s the same model that belonged to my great-grandfather. Knowing that I’m creating images with the same model of camera he once used over a century ago makes the experience feel even more special.

This first roll wasn’t perfect, but that’s exactly why I loved it. The learning curve is part of the adventure, and I’m already looking forward to loading another roll and putting these lessons into practice.

Film photography has officially pulled me in.

Stay tuned; I’ve also got a roll of 35mm from my Minolta coming soon. 😏

Some cameras are valuable because they’re rare. Others are valuable because of the stories they carry.

The Kodak No. 2 Folding Autographic Brownie holds a special place in my collection because it belonged to my great grandfather. While his original camera is no longer functional, I still have it, and it remains one of my most treasured pieces of photographic history.

Wanting to experience photography the way he might have over 100 years ago, I tracked down a working example of the same model. I could have chosen any modern camera; Or even another vintage camera, but this felt like the closest connection I could have to the images and memories he once created.

In a world of instant previews, autofocus, and endless storage, there was something exciting about slowing down and creating photographs with a camera designed in 1915.

Now comes the hardest part… waiting.

The film has been sent off for development, and I have absolutely no idea what to expect. Maybe the images will be incredible. Maybe they’ll be a complete disaster. 🤣 Either way, the experience alone has been worth it.

A few fascinating facts:

* Introduced in 1915 and produced into the 1920s.
* Uses 120 film, which is still available today.
* Featured Kodak’s innovative “Autographic” system, allowing photographers to write notes directly onto their negatives.
* Helped make photography accessible to everyday people in the early 20th century.

It’s incredible to think this camera was capturing memories long before colour film became common, television entered most homes, or humanity stepped onto the Moon.

Now we wait for the results.

Would you like to see a video where I dive deeper into the history and operation of this camera? Let me know in the comments!
