Lately I’ve been really loving all of the in-home newborn sessions. There’s just something about photographing a family in their own space that feels so personal and relaxed - toddlers wandering in and out, baby snuggled up in the nursery, everyone a little more comfortable because they’re just home. 🤍
For families with older kids, in-home sessions can sometimes feel a bit easier. Siblings can go play, have snacks, watch a show for a bit, then jump back in for photos without parents feeling like they need to constantly keep them sitting nicely for two to three hours straight. It takes the pressure off.
And you don’t need to worry about “having everything.” I still bring dresses from the client closet, newborn and toddler outfits, wraps, accessories, and a bassinet setup so the session still has that soft, cohesive look.
In-home sessions also naturally lean a little more candid and connection-focused. The images tend to feel more lived in and personal, which I love so much. Buttttt… I still absolutely love studio newborn sessions too - especially for first time parents.
There’s something really nice about just showing up with your baby while everything is already set up and ready for you. No worrying about tidying the house, clearing windows for light, or getting things “photo ready.” The studio is quiet, cozy, neutral, and calm - and a lot of parents end up finishing getting ready and then just relaxing on the couch while I soothe and photograph baby.
Studio sessions are usually slightly more posed and refined overall, with plain backdrops, less visual distraction, and very consistent lighting throughout the gallery. In-home sessions rely more on the available natural light in your house, so things can vary a bit depending on window light, wall colours, decor, etc.
Really there’s no wrong choice - they’re just different. I’ve just noticed over the years that families with multiple little ones often feel way more relaxed at home, while brand new parents usually love the calm, easy studio experience. And I love being able to offer both. 😊🥰
