So what does it actually mean when I say that how your baby is cared for matters even more?

It means your baby sets the pace. I don't have a rigid posing flow that I work through at every newborn session because every baby is different. I'm watching your baby - how they're feeling, what they're communicating and what seems most comfortable for them in that moment.

If they've just had a big feed and they're gassy or squirmy, we might start with baby in your arms where they can be a little more upright and comfortable. If they're in a deep, relaxed sleep, that's a great time for me to photograph them on their own. If they're wide awake and content, we'll photograph their sweet and funny little expressions.

And if they cry? We figure out what they need.
Maybe it's another feed, a burp, a cuddle, or they're just exhausted and need some help settling. There is no timer running during my newborn sessions.

I'm there almost as another teammate - watching alongside you, helping soothe and settle when needed, and changing our plans based on the little person in front of us.

This is also why my newborn photography is so natural and minimal. I'm not changing your baby in and out of multiple outfits or moving them from prop to prop or unnatural poses. The focus stays on your baby, not everything around them.

When you hand me your newborn, you're trusting me with someone who means absolutely everything to you. Beautiful photographs matter to me - but making sure you are relaxed, and that baby feels safe, comfortable and cared for will always matter most. 🤍

A second for this little sweet pea who I've photographed since she was a newborn. 🪻

One of my favourite parts of photographing little kids is knowing I don't have to ask them to perform. I think that's one of the reasons I'm so drawn to summer field sessions. I love the soft blue green colours, but I also love that kids have room to wander a little. They always seem to find something that catches their attention - a flower, a grasshopper, an interesting rock - and those are usually the moments I end up loving most. 💛 When they're given the space to explore, that's when the photographs start to feel like them.

The photographs I find myself coming back to are almost never the ones where everyone is looking at the camera - they're the curious glances. The flowers they stop to pick. The serious little expressions while they examine a bug.The genuine smile that comes out of nowhere. The little moments of wonder that adults are sometimes too busy to notice. Those are the photographs that tell the story of who they are at this age.

There will always be some smiling-at-the-camera photos for the grandparents. 😉 But the photographs I hope you and your children will treasure one day are the ones that show what they were actually like, not just what they looked like.

Did you know I do, in fact, photograph dads with their babies too? 😁

I tend to share more images of moms because I know how often they're missing from the story. When I think back to my own babies, so many of the photos of me with them were grainy selfies or quick snapshots taken in the middle of the newborn haze. Like so many moms, I was exhausted, running on very little sleep, and definitely wasn't feeling the most beautiful. Looking back now, more than seeing my newborns dressed up as bears or foxes 😅 or the crappy quality selfies, I wish I'd had photographs that showed clearly and beautifully what those early days actually felt like.

So while I am always drawn to Motherhood photography, every newborn session includes dad too. And there's something special about watching a brand new Dad hold the tiniest person he's ever met. 🤍

I don't think I'll ever get tired of an all-white studio newborn session - because it keeps the focus on what actually matters. I don't feel the need to add much - the soft tones keep everything feeling calm and uncluttered, so your eye goes straight to your baby. Not a trendy prop, not a bright colour, not something that will feel dated in five years.

The older I get as a photographer, the less interested I am in adding more. More props. More colours. More trends. Give me beautiful light, a newborn, and the people who love them, and I'll that choose every time 😊🤍
