Yup. Another Merlin photo.
But not at the cabin.
Instead, not far from my house.
We have quite a few hawks and falcons in the area. It's prime habitat for them. Open fields, mixed and old growth forests, marshland, open water. A real paradise for an avian predator.
I'll go out on a limb here and say that this is probably a juvenile. There seems to be some down feathers still making their way to the surface beneath the pin feathers and fully formed juvenile feathers.
They are such a treat to observe. And one of my favorite poses is this one...the "May I help you?" look.

Hump Day tomorrow.
It will stop raining eventually. I think we're good for a while.

A memory from 2 years ago.

This is a LATE birthing for sure.
Poor litle gaffer had a lot of growing to do before winter arrived. Mamma deer are attentive, though.
She would have done everything she could to help this wee one grow healthy and strong. This was the first, and last time I saw the duo. But they can cover a lot of territory.

Humid Tuesday.
Not fun.
Be the best you can be.
No one can ask for any more.

Birds of a feather flock together. Or, not so much?

The male Wood Ducks are slowly gaining their colors back after going through the eclipse plumage stage that happens after mating. But they still have a way to go. Normally just before they pack their bags to head south, they have some of the most striking colors. And Autumn light accentuates how handsome they are.
In the rain this morning there were a handful of Canada Geese, Wood Ducks and Green-winged Teal taking advantage of a partially flooded cove brook. This happens when big tides fill Ronalds Cove and the water is pushed back up the brook, overflowing onto the marsh grass.
Before the resident beaver were murdered a couple of years ago, that area was covered in water all the time. And waterfowl didn't have to wait for high tides in order to take advantage of the area. There was activity in there 24/7. It was a thriving ecosystem. A true gem. Like everything else in the natural world that gets destroyed, uneducated humans were the key to its downfall.

Do bad things - Karma will get ya, eventually.

Toodle loo weird Monday.

Different stages of Woodland Sunflowers, a native herbaceous perennial in the aster family that can grow 5 to 7 feet tall.
I don't see these in very many places. But, surrounding mom's rhubarb patch that has been growing next to dad's old garage for as long as I have been alive is a bed of these beauties. They don't spread. But they grow in the exact same formation, encircling the rhubarb year after year. I so look forward to their return. It brings back memories of childhood...simpler times.
I feel that the time I spend with these flowers, with this subtle beauty, is just as important as any other moment in my life. And everything else can wait.

Mr. Merlin showed up at the pond again today on my second trip in just before supper time.
I have been wondering what he is feeding on. It wasn't possible to see him capture whatever it was. I sorta thought that he was snatching frogs from the waters edge - there are plenty of them.
Low and behold, his snack of choice has been dragonflies.
With the speed of a bullet and the sight of a hawk (falcon), he has been picking these off from mid-air.
Beyond amazing.
Mother Earth provides us with so many incredible sights and sounds. My entire life has been spent in awe of the world around us. And I am more mind-blown each day. I never stop learning. I might no retain much anymore (goddamn MS). But I learn just the same. Teaching others through my images has always been paramount too.
Hope that goal is being accomplished.

The big M-day (💩-day) is crawling out of the dungeon.
Good luck this week.

Sunday Silence
Golden

There's plenty of noise in the woods surrounding me.
But it's silent noise.
If you know, you know.

It's what I like to call a "pet morning".
If you aren't taking it in, I feel for ya.

A memory from 4 yrs ago.

Foxes are highly misunderstood creatures. In certain places across the globe, they are hunted for sport. They are considered a nuisance by many. Some will go out of their way to put the run to any they see...or even harm them if they can. They get blamed for chasing cats or small dogs - UNTRUE. I have witnessed on more than one occasion a fox being chased by a cat. And as you can see, they can coexist with other wildlife quite well. They scavenge for most food. Will eat berries and fruit. And hunt small mammals such as hare, mice and squirrels.
Education is the key to living in harmony with the creatures of the woods.

Pretty dark morning out there. But I've seen worse. Uniform cloud cover. Supposed to be like this throughout the day. Pretty decent for photos. So, I'll go see what is awake.

There are hawks. And there are falcons.
They are both fierce birds of prey, but they belong to different scientific families and have unique body shapes, flight styles, and hunting methods.
Basically, the biggest difference is speed. Falcons have long, narrow, pointed wings built for speed. Hawks have wide, rounded wings built for soaring.

The Merlin is a falcon.
They can move.
And this one played cat and mouse with me at 100MPH.

I took a second trip into the cabin just before sunset tonight because "something" was telling me to do so. You know, that voice. The one in my head that guides me. Not all the other ones that drive me batty.
For the first while, nothing was moving. So, I just sat on the new bench I built for the deck and took in the serenity. I was fine with just that. Then something flew in from out of nowhere, like a bat outta hell, and landed on a dead tree far away. The 800mm brought it in close enough for me to see what it was. But not enough for good photos. I watched him fly from tree to tree.... then off into the distance he went. Oh well. Can't win em all.
I went back to listening to the silence.
DAMN!
He made the loop around the perimeter of the pond, came back to where he first flew in from and landed on another dead tree in the pond 30 FEET AWAY FROM ME.
The camera was not in my hand.
It was leaning against the railing with the monopod attached.
I snuck it into my grip and tried to position myself so that I could get his full body into the frame with such a powerful lens. I guess I took too long - he flew away again.
🙇
Can't
Win
Em
All
I could see him moving around wayyyyyyy down at the other end of the pond. Then lost sight of him again.
After a while, I gave up.
The sun was starting to get low.
I was losing light.
So I packed up to leave.
As always, before I leave paradise, I give one final quick scan of the pond.
What was that dark spot on a tree top a couple hundred feet away?
BU**ER!
Unpack the gear again in a hurry. And he stuck around. And posed. Wonderfully. Looking at me. Looking over his shoulder. Looking off into the distance. Looking down into the pond. Just beautiful.
There you have it. The voice wins again.

Peace as we hit the halfway point of the weekend.

Through my lens right now...
Did I ever mention how much I love what I do?
How all-consuming it has been for decades?
How it makes all the wrong things in the world, right?

Sun is setting.
Back out to reality.
Photo will be posted later.
