Sunday Spotlight 📸🪵Black-backed Woodpecker
From the blur of behind-the-scenes to the crisp final frame—here’s the moment we worked so quietly to capture: a Black-backed Woodpecker (Picoides arcticus) pausing just long enough to show off its striking plumage and signature stare.

This species is a bit of a ghost in the forest—quiet, methodical, and often overlooked thanks to its jet-black back and stealthy movements. But if you’re lucky, and listening more than looking, it just might appear. You'll find these beautiful woodpeckers primarily in wooded areas after a wildfire as they love to chisel into freshly burned trees looking for beetle larvae.

Photographing a bird like this isn’t just about gear or timing—it’s about patience, presence, and a bit of serendipity.
