Yesterday I e-biked into Moraine Lake for sunrise. I looked at the weather and it looked to be the last day to visit the lake before the snow started to fly. The weather has been cold overnight the last few nights so I knew there was going to be ice on the lake.
I was able to spend time at my favourite place, alone. Just listening to the lake grown and flex.
As soon as I put my camera bag down, the lake made a big noise and of course I said “Hi” back. It was truly a special morning.

I took a bunch of shots but here is one for now, more to come later.

As per usual I am behind on my editing from this past summer and fall. I’ve been spending all my recent free time prepping my other business Ten Peaks Designs for the Banff Christmas Market
However a day out photographing for myself is due!

This shot is from one of my favourite spots we visited during my new group workshop series “Off The Beaten Path”, a slower based, more intentional small group adventure. I have a few spots available on a few workshops for next year.

Anyone else excited for the winter and hopefully a deep freeze?

This transitional season between fall and winter is probably the most exciting time for photography in Banff. Chasing the frozen edges of the lakes. Low foggy cloud mornings. The frost! I can’t explain how much I just LOVE my Canon Canada 200-800mm RF lens! This was shot at 800mm! As much as I’d love a big ol’ prime… I really love not having to crop!

The landscape is getting so colourful right now. Some places are finished with colour. Other places are peaking and some trees are still green! Such a beautiful time of the year!

On this day in 2019, I got one of my favourite shots of Moraine Lake.
Back then sunrise was much quieter and it was only photographers hanging out.
I had hoped to keep a similar composition for sunrise however another photographer decided he needed to walk through my foreground and instead of asking/waiting he just kind of ran through. He tried to avoid knowing my tripod over, but if he had asked I would have asked him to be careful to not knock over the snow on this juniper bush. Well he knocked off a good amount of snow and made it unusable for my intended sunrise foreground.
I think of that encounter every time I see this image. It reminds me that we all need to calm the f**k down a little bit and treat others with the courtesy you would want to be treated with.

I was missing over 5000 photos in my Lightroom catalogue from this Brooks Falls bear trip last year. They were in the folder, but they weren’t in Lightroom. I’ve added them and found this one :) I have more editing to do.

The fall season has started in the mountains. The trees are turning and the landscape feels like it’s waking up before it gets covered in snow.
