From the vintage vault.... The thrill of victory, and the agony of the ditch! Harry Tofflemire experienced it all at The Ridge Raceway, in Ridgetown Ontario in 1989. Harry's home track was the pavement at Checker Flag Speedway in Windsor. He was also found at the front of the pack on Sunday nights on the dirt at the ol' Ridge. The track had more than its share of character, offering many ways to end up in unusual situations. One of them being the infamous "Ridge Ditch". If you did not witness it yourself, what you need to know is that the bare dirt that you see right next to the 6 in the bottom photo, is the fast lane on the backstretch. As I so well remember from when I raced there, you'd do well to get the right rear nestled up against that very short berm. Go just that tick too far, and away you'd go into the ditch! When feature time rolled around, the track lighting, or lack thereof, made it very difficult to see the track limits. So you kinda felt around for it..... For bonus points.... if the ditch was full of water, the fans in the pits would be treated to an instant, cooling shower. Fans will know that this was not the only race car claiming ditch at the speedway, but it was certainly the most easily accessible.

The place was, shall we say rustic, narrow, dark, and TONS of fun! Great days at The Ridge Raceway.
