New Windsor Business Emerges Near Gordie Howe International Bridge

A new Windsor business is drawing attention in the city's west end. Located in the late afternoon shadows of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, CTC Concrete Inc. has been linked through corporate records and business addresses to properties owned by the Canadian Transit Company, with a member of the Moroun family identified as a director.

Moroun Family Expands Beyond Bridge Operations

The Moroun family, owners of the Ambassador Bridge, built its fortune through trucking, freight, and logistics companies, including Central Transport and Universal Logistics Holdings. Today, the family maintains significant transportation and land holdings throughout the Windsor-Detroit corridor.

CTC Concrete appears to be one of the family's first major industrial investments in Windsor outside of bridge-related operations. Ontario environmental approvals issued in 2025 outline plans for a concrete batching facility, with emissions assessments covering materials commonly associated with ready-mix concrete production.

A Strategic Windsor Location

While the Gordie Howe International Bridge is expected to reshape cross-border traffic, the Ambassador Bridge is likely to remain a major freight route. Given the Moroun family's extensive trucking and logistics interests, investments such as CTC Concrete may reflect a broader strategy to strengthen their presence in Windsor's industrial and transportation sectors.

As development continues, CTC Concrete is emerging as a notable addition to Windsor's growing industrial landscape.

Nestled in the heart of the lower Detroit River, Crystal Bay in Amherstburg, Ontario is a hidden waterfront gem just north of Boblo Island.

The bay sits between the busy northbound and southbound shipping lanes of the Livingstone Channel and the Amherstburg Channel, creating a remarkably calm and scenic refuge amid constant Great Lakes marine traffic.

Captured on a quiet late afternoon (June 2026), this view highlights the unique contrast between peaceful natural wetlands, crystal-clear waters, and the steady passage of freighters navigating one of North America's most important shipping corridors.

Crystal Bay is known for its clean sheltered waters, abundant wildlife, and exceptional opportunities for photography, boating, and birdwatching.

By now, most of the general public have learned about the cancellation of the ribbon cutting and subsequent opening of the $6.4-billion Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Windsor and Detroit.

While government officials have consistently stated that the project's launch depends on final testing, commissioning, and operational approvals, recent developments have fueled speculation that broader Canada-U.S. trade negotiations may also be influencing the timeline.

The indefinite postponement has generated growing frustration throughout the Windsor-Essex region, where residents and businesses have waited years for the transformative border crossing to begin operations.

Many community members question why a fully Canadian-funded infrastructure project that is substantially complete continues to face delays, particularly as expectations had been set for an opening this spring.

The uncertainty surrounding the bridge's debut has intensified calls for greater transparency and clearer communication regarding the remaining obstacles preventing the long-anticipated crossing from welcoming traffic.

One thing is for certain, the numbers welcoming the opening far outweigh the dissenting voices.

T/S State of Michigan captured in the Amherstburg Channel of the Detroit River as she passes Amherstburg, Ontario, in June 2026.

The 224-foot training vessel, built in 1985, is operated by the Great Lakes Maritime Academy. The academy prepares students for careers as marine officers and business professionals in the global maritime industry.

Serving as a floating classroom, the State of Michigan and three additional training vessels provide cadets with valuable hands-on learning experiences every day. With a crew of 15 officers and 2 instructors, the vessel typically accommodates up to 50 cadets during training voyages.

The long-awaited Gordie Howe International Bridge will officially celebrate its ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, June 12, 2026, marking a historic milestone for cross-border transportation between Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan.

The bridge is scheduled to fully open to traffic on Monday, June 15, 2026, creating a new gateway for trade, tourism, and travel between Canada and the United States.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is a $4.7 billion infrastructure project and the largest land border crossing project in North America. Spanning approximately 2.5 kilometres (1.5 miles), it features the longest cable-stayed main span in North America at 853 metres.

The six-lane bridge includes dedicated facilities for commercial traffic, passenger vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists, while providing direct highway-to-highway connections between Highway 401 in Ontario and Interstate 75 in Michigan. The new crossing is expected to improve border efficiency, strengthen economic ties, and support billions of dollars in annual trade between the two countries.

UPDATE JUNE 11th - As of first a.m. today, according to Detroit Media reports, the ribbon cutting has been postponed.

Tugboat Tuesday with the Clyde S. VanEnkevort

A classic Great Lakes sight on a beautiful mid-May day in 2026 as the articulated tug-barge (ATB) Clyde S. VanEnkevort and Erie Trader make their way upstream past historic Boblo Island on the Detroit River.

The Clyde S. VanEnkevort is one of the most powerful tugs operating on the Great Lakes, measuring 130 feet long, 50 feet wide, and producing an impressive 10,700 horsepower from her twin diesel engines. Built in 2011, she was acquired by VanEnkevort Tug & Barge in 2017 and paired with the self-unloading barge Erie Trader.

Her partner, the Erie Trader, is a massive 740-foot-long self-unloading barge with a 78-foot beam and 45-foot depth. Together, the tug and barge form an integrated unit stretching roughly 870 feet in overall length, making them comparable in size to many of the Great Lakes' larger freighters. The Erie Trader can carry more than 38,000 tons of bulk cargo, including iron ore, limestone, aggregates, and coal.

Founded in 1967 in Escanaba, Michigan, VanEnkevort Tug & Barge has grown into one of the leading tug-barge operators on the Great Lakes. The company specializes in moving bulk commodities efficiently across the lakes while using innovative articulated tug-barge technology that combines the flexibility of a tug with the cargo capacity of a traditional freighter.

As the Clyde S. VanEnkevort and Erie Trader slide past Boblo Island, they continue a long tradition of Great Lakes commerce, carrying the raw materials that help keep North America's industries moving.

Biz X was there!

The 24th Annual ICHA Fishing Derby was the place to be on Windsor’s waterfront on Saturday.

Our photo captured RCMP Inspector Tim Diebel demonstrating his rod-handling skills during the event.

It was an incredible day organized by the Italian Canadian HandiCapable Association (ICHA), providing an opportunity for individuals with disabilities and others facing challenges to enjoy a day of fishing and community on the waterfront.
