Starting a brand new business is exciting, nerve-wracking and SO worth celebrating.

Cheryl is the sister of one of my long-time clients, and when she went out on her own as a mortgage broker in Richmond, she wanted her brand to start strong from day one. So we did her branding session at home, in two looks, coffee in hand (the best way to do anything, right?).

Can we talk about how good jewellery looks in real life? Not on a white background, but on a slow, cozy morning with a warm mug in your hands.

For Liz Cameron Co, we spent the morning at home with Joy: a soft grey knit, layered gold rings and the prettiest pearl bracelet catching the window light. Their pieces are made to be worn every day, so that's exactly how we photographed them.

Product photos show the piece. Lifestyle photos show how it feels to wear it, and that's what makes someone fall in love.

The strongest team photos I take are not four headshots taken on four different days.

You can always tell. Four different lights, four different backgrounds, four slightly different versions of professional. Line them up on a website and they look like four people who happen to share a logo.

One session fixes it. Same light, same look, one afternoon. You get the group frame that makes you look like an actual team, everyone still gets their own solo shots, and it works out cheaper per person than booking separately.

Most of my real estate clients come as teams, and several have rebooked the whole team as people came and went. That is the argument, really.

I know exactly how it feels to dread being photographed. That is precisely why I do this work.

I was the one deleting photos of myself. Rewriting a caption four times. Deciding I would update my website once I looked a bit more like the version of me I had in my head.

So I understand what it actually costs a woman to book this. It is not really about the photos. It is about being willing to be seen at exactly the stage you are at, rather than the stage you meant to be at by now.

And the moment it shifts, when she stops managing her face and starts just being in the frame, is still the best part of my job. Over half the women who book me tell me they hate being photographed. That is not a warning sign. That is who this work is for.

Tag a woman who deserves to see herself this way.

How often I have the question, what actually happens during a branding session and here’s it is

Before we ever get to the location we’ve chatted countless times and have a very clear vision and plan in mind. So as soon as we meet we just need to chat through the ideas and create a plan for the space and the outfits you choose.

From there, we bounce around the space and capture all the photo and video content possible. The best part, is that because we’ve done the hard part before getting there, its relaxed and easy when we’re on location.

We hang out, chat and capture all the good things.
