Wildlife With Xander

Wildlife With Xander Experience nature with me. Based in Louisville, KY. Prints available on request. My name is Xander, welcome to my photography page.

There's nothing like the thrill of exploring nature. My hope is that I'll be able to show you something new and exciting. My favorite part of nature photography is sitting, learning, and being with my subject(s) for hours getting to see the world from their perspective.

A red eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) on a log at Bernheim Forest and Arboretum in Clermont, Kentucky. After pausing the photoshoot with the sunbathing reptile it decided to look directly into the camera for a brief moment before going back to its normal pose.

Flash back to two years ago, I came across this mother great horned owl (Bubo virginianus) with her very young owlet. It is still so crazy to me how much I've learned about the editing process and photography in general in these two years. I hope to continue to grow and learn as the journey continues. Time flies, whether human or bird.

Remembering a moment in Belize. Between taking pictures of green iguanas and chasing a flock of keel billed toucans, I found this vocalizing roadside hawk (Rupornis magnirostris) being mobbed by various songbirds. It flew from branch to branch looking for a place to hide from them.

A sunset encounter with one of our winter visitors here in the Kentuckiana area, the short eared owl (Asio flammeus). I was thankful to be able to capture this particular one from several angles as it sat perched for 10 or so minutes, modeling for me.

A very photogenic cormorant seen in early October in Acadia National Park. The bird was more focused on foot hygiene than my camera.

Sometimes the most common, seemingly mundane moments make for my favorite pictures. While in Bar Harbor at low tide I was able to walk from there to an adjacent island. While out with my camera I was able to capture this ring billed gull (Larus delawarensis) in flight with the busy lights of Bar Harbor shining in the background.

Upsetting to see this gorgeous red shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) get mobbed by robins while I was out walking through the Bonnycastle neighborhood of Louisville. It's always been a toss up whether I enjoy taking pictures of red tailed or red shoulder hawks more. Which subject do you think is more photogenic?

This is an ode to the domesticated chicken (part 1). Though different from my traditional post of wild animals I found this capture of a rooster near sundown to be worthy of posting. I hope you agree.

A lone turkey vulture (Cathartes aura) perches to watch the sunset at Beckley Creek Park in Louisville, KY. A nesting pair of American kestrels were calling across the street but this lone, silent, and still bird struck an artistic chord in me more than they did.

A double crested cormorant (Nannopterum auritum) at Falls of the Ohio State Park decided to hop out of the water and stretch its sea legs. Do you prefer a tight or wider crop in your wildlife photography?
