Mirrors - Shelby Waight (Women in Art 2025)
These pieces are inspired by this year’s theme: “Accelerate Action: Rights, Equality,Empowerment for ALL Women and Girls.” Today, women continue to face numerous challenges
in the ongoing struggle for gender-based equality, including colorism in the workplace, sports, education, and access to equal opportunities. We should be teaching young girls to take up space. Nothing is as important as taking up space in society and cementing yourself.- Zozibini Tunzi, the 2019 Miss Universe.
Our female leaders, doctors, Olympians, lawyers, and professionals in every field should serve as attainable role models for our young girls. Regardless of gender, ethnicity, financial status, or religion, now is the time for us to take action by nurturing their talents, providing opportunities,
encouraging support, teaching them their rights, and empowering them. The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow.
This piece features my own daughter alongside some friends, representing a mirror of potential, equality, empowerment and the future. When we look at each other, we see the same possibilities. By working together, teaching one another, and empowering one another, we can achieve great things. If we take action, we can all reach our dreams.
Let’s embody the change we wish to see in one another. Let’s become the versions of ourselves that would have inspired our younger selves. Together, we can empower our young girls to dream big, pursue their passions, and achieve their goals.
