How about two cheetah cubs just 30 minutes after getting off the plane? Sometimes you just get lucky. This little one and his sibling, just about two months old, played around with each other in the most amazing light just before the sun set. It was so much fun to watch them! Mum was very close to them, you can just see the tip of her tail next to the cubs.

It’s incredible where polar bears can climb. This mountain is super steep and the cub sometimes struggled to keep up with mum, but the two of them went up the mountain in order to find a place to sleep before looking for food again the next day. It was such a privilege to watch them in action after finding them in the late afternoon.

Thousands and thousands of king penguins… South Georgia is home to the world‘s largest penguin colonies. See all those brown and black/white dots in the background? Every single dot is a penguin. As far as the eye reaches. South Georgia is a very special place.

This cutie shares my birthday with me! All elephant seal pups in this beach are born within a few days. I was in this location for five days. At the beginning, there were very few pups and lots of heavily pregnant mums, but babies were born every day and after just five days, nearly all females had their babies. They are so cute with their big eyes, they are curious and want to explore the world. The very fatty milk they drink with up to over 50% fat enables the little elephant seals to gain weight fast. After about 28 days, mums will leave their babies to go back to the ocean. The pups stay ashore for about another 6 weeks before they eventually try to swim and leave the beach as well.

Penguins parents go out to the sea to feed and regurgitate food for the chick once they get back. While the parents are gone, the fluffy brown chicks stay in a crèche until they moult into their adult plumage. With the adult feathers, they venture into the ocean for the first time in their life and get their first fresh food.

The trip to the Falklands was perfectly timed for gentoo penguin chicks hatching. These little ones seem to cuddling, mere hours old. Cuteness overload!

These gentoo penguins are just coming back from feeding at sea. They crisscross the water close to the beach, going back and forth, looking for Antarctic fur seals that could wait for them to have a snack for dinner. Only when they are pretty sure there is no danger, they will come out of the ocean, walk across the beach and back to their colony to spend the night.

These gentoo penguins are just coming back from feeding at sea. When they get out of the ocean, there are lots of splashes and it is so much fun to watch them from the beach. Sometimes, they land on their feet, sometimes, they fall over on their full belly. As elegant and fast they are in the water, it’s a different story on land.

Rockhopper penguins are probably the funniest penguins around. The feathers on their head make them look very interesting to start with, even more so in combination with their red eyes Their behavior is just too funny to watch, they are constantly doing something: stealing rocks from the neighbor’s nest, jumping around, fending off attacks from skuas trying to steal their eggs, and of course preening oneself and their partner. They are feisty and strong, going into the sea to feed, only to come back to huge waves crashing into the rocks, having to climb nearly vertical cliffs to get back to the colony. Amazing little creatures!

Imperial cormorants are monogamous birds. Their striking blue eye and orange know at the head are beautiful, and during the breeding season they have a crest that is not visible for the rest of the year. The iridescent feathers can only be seen if the light hits them, they are stunning! These guys are nesting and the female is shouting at another bird flying past the colony.

Over 100 years ago, there has been a whaling station in South Georgia. In Grytviken, visitors now can walk through the former station. The whalers also built a church in front of the stunning mountain backdrop. These days however, the area is taken over by nature again, and the penguins and sea elephants are numerous.
