Another of the species I have found so far in my garden here in Brunei (Borneo). This is the ubiquitous Common Tree Frog (Polypedates leucomystax). Although this species is native to Borneo, it has likely made its way to this part of Brunei due to anthropogenic means.

Taken with my new .

Well, we have officially made it to Brunei (Borneo)! I've only been here a day, but I headed out into my new garden last night to see if anything was about. Amazingly, in the space of 10 minutes I had found four different species of frogs and thought I would share one of them today. This Banded Bullfrog (Kaloula pulchra), although not actually native to Borneo, is still quite a cool species, and I approve of the fact that its specific epithet 'pulchra' means 'beautiful'!

This is also the first photo that I've shared here with the use of my excellent new - I'll share more of my thoughts on this great bit of kit in time.

I've been back in the UK for the last few weeks, seeing family and friends and preparing for the move to Brunei (Borneo) in a couple of weeks. Just before I left Brazil earlier this month I did manage one last adventure there - a rocket run up to Pernambuco towards the northern end of the Atlantic Forest. The purpose of this trip was to obtain photos of the Atlantic Forest Bushmaster (Lachesis rhombeata) for an upcoming book. Although originally described as a distinct species, it was for most of its taxonomic history considered at most a subspecies of L. muta. However, a study in 2024 elevated it to full species status. Consequently, this species (which is under pretty serious conservation risk, with much of its habitat long gone) seems relatively unknown compared to the other Bushmasters.

Many thanks to the awesome team at and their associates for their help with seeing and photographing this incredible animal:

A Guibe's False Coral Snake (Oxyrhopus guibei) from the outskirts of Brasilia, Brazil. A nice bonus, road-cruised only a few minutes after the Neotropical Rattlesnake shared yesterday, at the end of an otherwise unproductive night. A great spot by .macro.

A Neotropical Rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus) from the outskirts of Brasilia, Brazil. This species was the primary reason for my recent trip to the cerrado - my first and so far only rattlesnake! Although reasonably common and widespread, finding one in such a short window outside of the peak season was far from guaranteed. The trip took a fairly classic pattern: we found a roadkill one within minutes of leaving the airport. This sad sight did however raise our hopes of finding a live one. We then had two days of nothing at all. In the final moments our last evening, when we had all but given up, we managed to cruise one (a juvenile) some 20 minutes away from our accommodation.

A Tiger-legged Monkey Frog (Pithecopus hypochondrialis) from the outskirts of Brasilia, Brazil. I think this might be my favourite species from my recent trip - very much like a miniature version of the better-known Tiger-striped Leaf Frogs (Callimedusa tompopterna) from the Amazon.
