Global warming forced the polar bears toward northern Russia this spring, following the sea ice. I was grateful this bear and her cub stayed behind in Norway's Svalbard Islands. These images are from "Arctic Fading," my series on the warming Arctic. Very light printing helps convey the message.

In my workshop course at San Francisco Art Institute on using your photos for social justice, we'll learn to create powerful photo series on issues that are important to you and the world. The course begins June 6. Join us.

In this 2017 photo, the French social justice artist JR is pictured at his installation on the U.S. southern border. The photo is by John Francis Peters for The New York Times.

JR's work is part of the long history of social justice photography and art. Join my workshop course at San Francisco Art Institute on using your work for social justice and we'll be discussing some of this history as you create new work. The six weekly evening classes begin June 6.

The images here are from my series: Substitutes. This project was born when I wondered why the women taking care of the children in my neighborhood were all women of color and the children were all white. When Substitutes was first shown, the work went viral — over 1 million web views, international press coverage and TV interviews.

Take my workshop course at San Francisco Art Institute on using your images for social justice. You'll learn how to make your work support your beliefs and attract wide attention. The course begins June 6.
