Higher Calling Photography

Higher Calling Photography Showcasing the beauty I see in God's Creation for His glory and the enjoyment of others. Beauty is no accident.

This amazing world with its majestic mountains, delicate flowers, splendid animals, and elegant people is all the work of a master Craftsman. My goal in photography is to capture glimpses of God's glory revealed through His creation and share them with others so they, too, will honor Him. Sometimes, that is simply through the image itself, but I enjoy pairing Scripture and heavenly-minded quotes t

o my photos as well. By profession, I am focused on fulfilling the Great Commission by getting the Gospel to those who have not yet had opportunity to hear it. The Apostle Paul exhorts us in I Corinthians 10:31 to do everything for the glory of God, so my hobby of choice must also reflect that calling. My focus is generally landscape and wildlife, although I do ministry-focused portraits as well.

I LOVE irises! They're amazing even before they're open! This one is part of a gorgeous woodland patch that escaped someone's garden long ago. Early this spring I collected several of the bulbs and brought them into a corner of my garden so I could see them from the kitchen window.

Have you noticed that I'm enthralled with the flowers right now?! 😍 I am making daily trips through my wildflower patch and the surrounding woods to see what's blooming and am constantly delighted! This native columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) is one of two small plants I bought from Missouri Wildflowers Nursery a year ago and they are BOOMING right now!

What's that yellow flower? In my neck of the woods, the open fields are full of this beautiful yellow flower. It is known as wintercress and yellow rocket (Barbarea vulgaris) and is part of the mustard family. Native to Eurasia, it has apparently been on this continent for a couple centuries.

Another fun little native flower that is in bloom right now, violet wood sorrel (Oxalis violacea). I fell in love with the Oxalis triangularis that grew in my Bolivian gardens, so I was thrilled to find one of its cousins in Missouri!

The native violets are SO delightful right now! In some areas, they practically make a carpet! There are quite a variety that we have found... these are what we mostly have around the house.

Hallelujah!

"For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep." I Corinthians 15:3-6 ESV

The bluebirds (Sialia sialis) persist in maintaining possession of the birdhouse out the living room window. The female, seen here, has taken to using the window screen as a perch when going to/from the house, so she's constantly close by. Her mate stays close by in the tree, but is more wary of the camera than she is.

One of the joys of early spring is that you never know what you're going to find. Today, I was delighted by this blue phlox (Phlox divaricata) popping up in an area I recently cleared of invasive honeysuckle! I am checking my various native wildflower plantings every day and am pleased by all the new growth I am seeing!

When the pelicans are fishing, it's hard to know where to focus and how much to try to capture, as it seems like pure chaos! The are usually in groups, swimming along and then suddenly launch forward and plunge their faces into the water. In this image, you get three different stages of the process.

This male brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater) kept a wary eye on me from the protection of the thicket. These get a bad rap with many birders due to being a brood parasite -- that is, the females lay their eggs in the nests of other birds, who then raise the baby cowbirds as their own to the detriment of their own young. This is apparently due to the fact that they were following the bison herds and couldn't stay in one place long enough to nest and raise children.
