We thought the trip to Baikonur was ending quietly.

After days of exploring the cosmodrome, we went for one last hike and ended up inside an empty, abandoned building. We knew there was armed military around the area, so we stayed completely quiet.

We waited inside for an hour and a half.

Outside, it was getting darker. Then we noticed something through the broken windows.

There were security vehicles outside.

Several armed guards were standing around, lighting ci******es and watching the building.

They weren't talking.

They were just waiting.

Waiting for us to make a sound.

We froze.

Every cigarette glowing in the darkness felt like a countdown. Nobody dared to move. We stayed completely silent, listening to footsteps outside and watching the smoke disappear into the night.

Then, after what felt like forever, the guards and their vehicles finally moved away.

That was our chance.

We waited a little longer, then quietly slipped out through another side of the building and started moving back on foot.

We didn't run. We didn't speak.

We just kept walking until we were far enough away.

When we finally looked back, the building was completely dark.

We had made it out.

Baikonur was behind us.

And that night, none of us slept.
