Today is World Photography Day! 📸

Heres a couple of my favourite shots from this year so far to celebrate such an occasion!

For me, the camera has never just been a tool to capture a moment—it’s a way to give a voice to the incredible wildlife we share this planet with, especially the endangered species that need our protection the most.
I like to think Every frame is about telling a story, sparking curiosity, and hopefully inspiring others to care about the natural world as deeply as I do myself.

I also want to take a quick moment to say a huge thank you to everyone here. Whether you’ve been following my journey from the start or are just joining now, your support, engagement, and shared passion for conservation mean the world to me. Thank you for being part of this community and helping me share these stories! 🐾

🌿 Spotlight today is on the Goodfellow’s Tree-Kangaroo🦘

Did you know these fascinating marsupials traded the open plains for a life high up in the forest canopy?

While most kangaroos are famous for hopping across the ground, this unique species is built entirely for climbing! With strong forelimbs, powerful curved claws, and a long tail for supreme balance, they spend their days expertly navigating the treetops. 🌳🐾

🌍 Where they’re from:

These beauties are native to the lush, tropical rainforests of the island of New Guinea. High up in the dense foliage, they feed on leaves, fruit, and flowers. 🍃🍊

⚠️ Conservation Status:

On the IUCN Red List, the Goodfellow’s tree-kangaroo is currently listed as Endangered. Their wild populations are facing serious threats, primarily from severe habitat loss due to logging, agriculture, and deforestation, as well as hunting pressure. 📉💔

Every time we share and talk about these lesser-seen species, we help raise awareness for their protection and the fragile ecosystems they call home.

Something slightly different for me today - being back in the UK has afforded me to opportunity to see a near full Solar Eclipse. ☀️ 🌒

This is the first ‘Complete’ Solar Eclipse in the UK for 27 years! And the next is expected to be in 2090! A rare sight to see, and I for one feel lucky to have seen it!

The spotlight today is on the Capybara, the undisputed king of the rodents and the largest living one on Earth! 👑 🌎

Where are they from?:

Native to South America, these semi-aquatic mammals thrive across tropical and temperate regions, sticking close to dense forests, flooded grasslands, and major water bodies like rivers and lakes.

A few fun facts!⚡️:

Built for Water: Their scientific name literally translates to “water hog”, and their partially webbed toes make them exceptional swimmers.

Ultimate Chill: They are famously laid-back, often found chilling with birds, monkeys, and even predators without a single care in the world.

Natural Divers: They can hold their breath underwater for up to five minutes to hide from danger.

Conservation Status & Threats ⚠️

IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern 🟢

Why They Face Pressures:
While widespread and currently stable overall, capybaras face localized threats. They are hunted across parts of South America for their meat and leather, and for fatty tissue grease used in pharmaceuticals.
In some areas, they are also targeted as bait or impacted by agricultural expansion encroaching on their wetland habitats 🌎🏝️

Today’s spotlight is on Mandrill! It the largest species of monkey in the world and an absolute masterpiece of nature’s color palette! 🎨

Where They’re From 🌍:

Native to the dense tropical rainforests of Central Africa, including Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Congo.

Here’s a few Fun Facts 📜:

Living Rainbows: Adult males feature striking, vibrantly colored bright blue and red skin markings on their faces, which become more intense when they are excited or dominant.

Social Giants: They live in massive, complex social groups called “hordes” that can sometimes number over a human-led count of several hundred individuals.
Ground Dwellers: Despite being capable tree climbers, they spend most of their time foraging on the forest floor for fruits, seeds, and small invertebrates.

⚠️ Why They’re Endangered ⚠️

IUCN Red List Status: Vulnerable 🔴

They are facing rapid population declines.

The Threats: They are heavily impacted by rampant habitat destruction from commercial logging and agriculture, alongside intense pressure from the illegal bushmeat trade. Raising awareness is critical to protecting what’s left of their wild strongholds! 🌍

Paintbrush Tongues & True Love 🦜

Today’s spotlight is on the Rainbow Lorikeet, a medium-sized parrot that looks like it flew straight out of a watercolor painting!

🇦🇺 Where Are They From?

Native to the eastern seaboard of Australia, these colorful characters thrive in rainforests, woodlands, and even bustling coastal cities.

💡 Fun Facts
The “Paintbrush” Tongue: They have specialized, brush-tipped tongues designed to lick up pollen and scoop sugary nectar from deep within flowers.

Partners for Life: These social birds are strictly monogamous, staying paired up with the same mate for life.

Loud Neighbors: They travel in highly energetic, incredibly noisy flocks that can easily take over a treetop.

📉 The Conservation Paradox
Here is a bit of a plot twist: the Rainbow Lorikeet is thankfully NOT endangered. In fact, they are highly adaptable and incredibly common!

IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC)

The Real Story: While their overall population is secure, specific local sub-species face regional challenges from habitat degradation and the historical wild pet trade. However, in other parts of Australia (like Western Australia), introduced populations have actually done too well, becoming so abundant that they are considered agricultural pests!

It’s a powerful reminder of how delicate ecological balances are, and why protecting native habitats matters—even for the species that seem to be thriving.

🌟 Meet the Ring-Tailed Lemur! 🌟

Today’s Spotlight is on one of Madagascar’s most iconic—and endangered—residents: the Ring-Tailed Lemur 👑

With their striking amber eyes and unmistakable striped tails, these charismatic primates are true evolutionary marvels.

📍 Where Are They From?
They are native exclusively to the island of Madagascar, thriving primarily in the dry deciduous forests, spiny bush, and gallery forests of the southern and southwestern regions. 🇲🇬

🐒 3 Quick Fun Facts

Sun Worshipers: First thing in the morning, they sit in an “open-armed” yoga pose facing the sun to warm up. 🧘‍♂️☀️

Stinky Wars: To settle disputes without fighting, males engage in “stink fights” by rubbing scent secretions onto their tails and waving them at rivals. 🦨💨

Female-Led Societies: Lemur troops are strictly matriarchal. The females rule the roost, getting first choice of food and mates! 👑🙋‍♀️

🚨 Why Are They Endangered?
Despite their popularity, the wild population is in a critical situation: IUCN Red List Status: 🔴 Endangered

The Threats: Over 95% of Madagascar’s lemur species are threatened. For the ring-tail, the primary culprits are severe habitat loss (due to charcoal production and agriculture), illegal hunting, and the live pet trade. Their forest homes are shrinking daily, fragmenting their remaining populations.

We need to protect the rich, unique biodiversity of Madagascar before these incredible animals disappear from the wild entirely. 🌍💚

July 3rd only means one thing! It’s world Meerkat Day!

Swipe left to see a little guy Standing tall and staying alert! 🐾✨

Ever wondered about the little absolute legends of the desert? Check out this handsome fellow looking out on sentry captured recently!

Here is the quick lowdown on one of the animal kingdom’s most fascinating creatures:

🌍 What & Where: Meerkats are actually small members of the mongoose family! They are native to the arid grasslands and deserts of southern Africa (like the Kalahari and Namib deserts).

💡 Fun Facts:
The Ultimate Squad: They live in highly social groups called “mobs” or “clans” of up to 40 individuals.

On Watch Duty: They utilize a brilliant “sentinel” system where one designated meerkat stands on its hind legs as a lookout for predators while the others forage.

Immune to Venom: They have a high tolerance for venom, meaning scorpions and spiders are regularly on the dinner menu! 🦂

🛑 Conservation Status:
Fortunately they are officially classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List!

However, they aren’t entirely out of the woods! Local populations face growing pressure from climate change (extreme droughts reducing their insect food supply) and habitat fragmentation from farming and human development.

Protecting their fragile arid environments will keep these amazing sentinels standing tall for generations to come!

Looking into those eyes, it’s impossible not to feel a deep connection. 🐒👀

I’ve spoken about how Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives, sharing nearly 99% of our DNA. From their complex social lives to their incredible ability to craft tools, they are as brilliant as they are beautiful. But right now, they are fighting for survival.

But I want to reiterate that they are Classified as Endangered (and even Critically Endangered for some subspecies) by the IUCN, their future is under threat from habitat loss, poaching, and the spread of disease.

Seeing a face like this, I’m reminded that we are the ones who hold the power to protect them. I think we should all take a stand and speak up for those who can’t.

Here we have some true royalty of the West African canopy: the King Colobus monkey! 👑🐒

Here is a cheeky little baby King Colobus being carefully groomed by mum - and they don’t seem to happy about it!

🌍 Where in the world are they from?:
They are native to the high-canopy lowland and mountain rainforests of West Africa, ruling the treetops from Senegal down to the Ivory Coast.

✨ Here’s some Fun Facts:

Born in pure white: Infants are born completely snowy-white! 🍼 They gradually develop their signature high-contrast black-and-white coats as they grow up.

“Mutilated” thumbs? The name Colobus comes from a Greek word meaning “cut short” or “mutilated”. They only have a tiny, rounded stump for a thumb—an evolutionary adaptation that lets them use their hands like hooks to swing incredibly fast through the trees!

Ultimate sunbathers: Because their diet is almost entirely low-calorie leaves, they have giant, complex stomachs to digest it all. They spend over half their day completely resting and sunbathing just to conserve energy for digestion! ☀️

🚨 Why they need our help 🚨
Tragically, King Colobus populations are in a steep decline, and they are officially listed as Endangered by the IUCN. They are losing their primary forest homes rapidly due to logging, agriculture, and commercial development. Historically targeted for their stunning fur coats, they continue to face immense pressure today from illegal bushmeat hunting.

Protecting our planet’s ancient forests means protecting these incredible canopy leapers before they vanish into history. 🌿🖤🤍
