It’s a simple question that gets to the core of someone’s wellbeing: did your childhood leave you feeling OK as you were? Or did you feel you needed to be extraordinary to deserve a place on the earth? Are you now relaxed about your status in life? Or are you a manic overachiever or filled with shame at your mediocrity?

Twenty percent of us are uncomfortable; refusing to believe that anything is enough, or cursing ourselves as failures. At school, we worked very hard, not because we were drawn to the topics, but because we felt compelled. A parent needed us to be special to shore up their own self. The child needed to achieve and could not just be.

Achievement can be a species of mental illness. The world divides into those who can be ordinary and those compelled to be remarkable. A breakdown can be a bid for health, an attempt to force self-understanding. Our societies lack inspiring images of good enough ordinary lives, associating them with being a loser. Yet, success might be nothing more than a quiet afternoon with the children.

The hallmark of an excellent parent is how seldom their child thinks of them when fully grown. When an upbringing has been happy, a parent’s abiding love and support is taken for granted: the child's mind is free to contemplate more contentious questions. Only when something has gone badly wrong does a parent take centre stage in their adult concerns.
