"Flax River" Lieven Detemmerman

A few weeks ago, I discovered the beautiful nature in Bavikhove-Ooigem, surrounding an old meander of the River Leie. This nature area is part of a bigger project Seine-Schelde which includes in addition to shipping infrastructure, also river restoration measures, such as nature-friendly reinforcement of banks and the restoration of fauna and flora like this old meander of the river Leie.

I enjoyed capturing the beautiful nature very early in the morning with rising sun, wisps of mist and the old flax factory building.

Een aantal weken geleden ontdekte ik een zeer mooi natuurgebiedje in Wielsbeke, Bavikhove, Ooigem rondom een oude Leiemeander. Dit gebied is één van de projecten van het Seine Schelde project van de Vlaamse Waterweg waarbij ook wordt ingezet op natuurbehoud en recreatie. De setting die ochtend was perfect. Een mooi opgaande zon, nevelslierten, grondmist, prachtige natuur, kortom een top-moment om aan landschapsfotografie te doen. Foto's volgen...

A while ago I did a photoshoot of a few new dishes for Koaze. Koaze makes Halloumi baking cheese from milk from local farmers in a small-scale ecological way. The recipes of the new dishes will soon be online on the Koaze website.

"Mobile Crab trap"
Serie: Climate in Flanders

Last week I did a photo shoot of a test setup of a mobile crab trap by the Flemish Environmental Agency (VMM).

The Chinese mitten crabs (Eriocheir sinensis) are on the rise in many waterways in Flanders and this invasive alien species poses a real threat to local fauna and flora.

This mobile crab trap is part of the European Interreg project 'Clancy' in which the Flemish Environmental Agency (VMM) collaborates with other partners from Belgium, France, Germany and Sweden.
The aim of the project is to significantly reduce the mitten crab population in European rivers while improving the rivers ecological status.

The mobile crab trap can be quickly deployed to evaluate the occurrence of crabs in small rivers like for instance in this study on the Zwalm river.

In a later phase, a permanent crab trap can be installed closer to the mouth of the river Zwalm at the river Scheldt.
In a permanent installation crabs will not have to be collected but will be redirected into the river Scheldt protecting
the ecology quality of upstream rivers.

"Lightning Bay"

Bliksems verlichten de baai van Venetië en kondigen zwaar stormweer aan.

Ik maakte de foto eind juli tijdens een citytrip in Venetië. De temperaturen in Italië waren uitzonderlijk hoog en overdag was het zweten en puffen. ’s Avonds stak de wind op en barste een hevig onweer los boven de stad.

Het was de voorbode voor noodweer in het noordoosten van Italië met hagelbollen zo groot als ping-pongballen en tal van overstromingen in de regio.

Door de klimaatwijziging treden steeds meer extremere weerfenomenen op.

A lightning storm introducing heavy weather, illuminates the bay of Venice, Italy.

Last July I made a citytrip to Venice. The temperatures were very high during the day. But in the evening a storm with heavy rainshowers came over the city.

I took my camera between 2 heavy rainshowers and took this picture from a jetty at the waterfront. The following days after I'd left Italy there were heavy storms in the region with much damage.

Climate change is causing more extreme weather conditions such as storms.

Een paar weken geleden deed ik een fotoshoot van enkele zeer gedreven jonge mensen om hun nieuwe 'Start-up' te promoten. Ze ontwikkelen hun eigen merk 'Doozy'. Ecologische, kwaliteitsvolle en duurzame T-shirts.

A few weeks ago I did a photoshoot of some very driven young people to support their new 'Start-up'. They develop their own brand 'Doozy'. Ecological, high-quality and sustainable T-shirts.
