In the last decade I’ve traveled to Russia’s Far North to photograph the race for Arctic resources, especially natural gas, which Europe depends on for some 35 percent of its need.

Over time, I gained the cooperation of energy companies, which showed me their tech, and the Russian military, which granted me access to strategic areas — no doubt for strategic reasons. This story in the Guardian today offers a rare look inside energy politics’ coldest battle front.

When people think of grapes, they often think of harvest. But wine-growing requires hard work every day of the year.

I shot these pictures at the Pinot Noir vineyards shared by Perrier-Joüet, one of France’s loveliest estates, and Mumm. Workers were pruning the vines in deep winter to stimulate growth when spring comes.

I know this area well as a photographer, writer, and former champion wine taster. Recently my story about Champagne was published in Geo.

While contemplating the idea of Christmas, I’d like to share one more picture, shot recently while kayaking along the coast of Brittany, France. It was a serene moment.

The region, known as Bretagne in French, juts out toward the Atlantic Ocean. Brittany is sometimes referred to as Little Britain, as it borders the English Channel to the north.

Merry festivities!

GEO published my Hotel Quarantine text and photo story in this month's print edition. I shot the whole reportage on my iPhone to stay low-profile. Looks fine, no? If you are in Germany, do pick up a copy at the news stands; for those outside, you can read my original text in English here: www.justinjin.com/quarantine

Life after the quarantine in Shanghai has been good. Dad is slowly improving, and Covid seems like a distant memory in the metropolis. I will post some thoughts on China's digital Covid regime soon.
