I’ve photographed Brussels at night for years.

I wanted to understand what goes on in these streets I call home past a certain hour.

So I grabbed my camera and walked aimlessly till the early hours of the morning, mostly by foot.

I found beautiful souls who all had the same solitude, depth, questions and fears in their eyes, just as I did.

I still don’t know what draws me to these situations. I’ve always followed my gut feeling and my insatiable desire for adventure. And maybe that’s it? That’s all that matters? Maybe there’s no deeper meaning. Maybe that desire to be out among the night workers, outcasts, homeless, drunk, broken, dreamers, thugs and restless is just that, a desire.

I don’t know. All I know is that these nights out in Place de la Bourse, Avenue Louise, Boulevard du Jardin Botanique, the ULB Solbosch campus, boulevard Mettewie or somewhere between Jette and Laeken gave me the most joyous, compassion filled, soul soothing moments I’ve ever experienced.

That can’t be “just” a desire to make pictures. But hey, let’s not overthink it.

Use your legs :)

When you find an interesting subject to photograph, scan the whole area around it to see if you could add an interesting twist to it. If you do, move your body to find the right angle, and voila 😉

You have to feel good about what you do

Combat your insecurity and everything that makes you feel illegitimate. Shoot properly, frame properly, come across well, and produce the awesome work you know you’re capable of

2026 is our year

Still making baby steps into showing my face more and sharing the thought behind my work, projects, Brussels, and everything else I like to talk about. But I’ll get there :)

I hope the world doesn’t get nuked to death before I do, though

That was annoying

Not because I got my picture taken by a stranger. It happened before. And I do it myself

But because the way he did it was so pathetic

Both hands on his camera, turning around pretending to be searching for something, OBVIOUSLY pressing the shutter, and then leaving

To the street photographers who do this: have you ever tried practicing your art form properly ? Did you lose a tooth while doing so ? Is this why you’re resorting to shooting like pedos on a kids playground ? Because that’s exactly what you look like

Photography is difficult enough already. If on top of that, you add a permanent feeling of insecurity that you’re doing something wrong… you’re just ruining it for all of us. Be responsible, be the artist you claim to be, face the potential (and very unlikely) backlash like an adult, and get on with it.
