“What I see when I make a photograph says who I am.
What you see when you look at a photograph says who you are.”
Photography is never only about the subject in front of the camera. Every image is shaped by memory, emotion, experience, fear, longing, taste, and belief...both from the person creating it and the person viewing it.
As Anaïs Nin wrote:
“We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.”
Perhaps that is why one photograph can mean something entirely different to every person who looks at it.
