বাংলাদেশ নদীমাতৃক দেশ। সমাজ গঠনে নদীর ভূমিকা প্রাচীনকাল থেকেই প্রাধান্য পেয়ে আসছে। নদী মানুষের জীবনে অবিচ্ছেদ্য অঙ্গ। নদনদীর অববাহিকায় গড়ে উঠেছে মানবসভ্যতার ইতিহাস। দেশের কৃষিকাজ, পানি বিদ্যুৎ, পানি সেচ, ব্যবস্থা সুলভ পানিপথ পরিবহন, পানীয় জলের জোগান, মৎস্য উৎপাদন, শহর ও শিল্পকেন্দ্রের প্রয়োজনীয় পানি সরবারহ প্রভৃতি ক্ষেত্রে দেশবাসী নদনদীর প্রভাব খুবই বেশি। নদনদীগুলো যেন মায়ের হাতে সন্তান স্নেহে লালন-পালন করে চলছে। দেশের অর্থনৈতিক ক্রিয়াকলাপে নদনদীর গুরুত্ব অপরিসীম। পৃথিবীর সব নদীই বিশ্বমানবতার পথিকৃৎ ||
