Faces of the City Faces of the City-A Research based project on studio photography in Bangladesh. Faces of the City

“Panoly Photographers Studio” was founded by Mr. Haji Md.

Delowar Hossain in 1981, who started a venture in photography at his family building in Dhanmondi Road 27 at Dhaka, Bangladesh. This studio was in working condition till March 2016 until the old building was demolished for new construction. Joyanta Howlader, the curator of the project ‘ Faces of the City’ along with Rakib Ahmed, a visual artist have discovered the studio stock material during thei

r last exhibition, ‘D27’- a multi dimensional art exhibition, prior to the demolition of the building. From the studio store they recovered old equipments and thousands of well-preserved medium format negatives.
‘Faces of the city’ is like an archeological finding of photography practice in the studios during the last quarter of the previous century. The studio stock material thousands of medium format negatives give a different reality within our reality. The project will be showcasing nameless faces with numbers, time, space, fashion, lifestyle of 1980s Dhaka city as a time capsule that revels itself to the viewers after some decades.

At Samdani Art Foundation Samdani Art Award 2018

The Samdani Art Foundation (SAF) announces the shortlist for the fourth biennial Samdani Art Award—Bangladesh's premier art award. The Samdani Art Award aims to support, promote, and highlight Bangladeshi contemporary art, and was created to honour one talented emerging Bangladeshi artist between the ages of 22 and 40.

Each of the eleven shortlisted artists will show newly commissioned work in an exhibition at the Dhaka Art Summit (DAS) from February 2-10, 2018, guest curated by Simon Castets, Director of the Swiss Institute, New York. During the summit, the award will be presented by Tate's Director, Dr. Maria Balshaw, selected by a jury chaired by Delfina Foundation's Director Aaron Cezar and comprised of artists Sheela Gowda, Runa Islam, Subodh Gupta, and Mona Hatoum. In association with the Liverpool Biennial, each of the shortlist artists will receive curatorial mentoring support from the New North and South network and the winner will receive a three month residency with the Delfina Foundation in London.
