PHOTOGRAPH: Migrant Mother by Dorothea Lange

The photograph that has become known as "Migrant Mother" is one of a series of photographs that Dorothea Lange made of Florence Owens Thompson and her children in February or March of 1936 in Nipomo, California. Lange was concluding a month's trip photographing migratory farm labor around the state for what was then the Resettlement Administration. In 1960, Lange gave this account of the experience:

"I saw and approached the hungry and desperate mother, as if drawn by a magnet. I do not remember how I explained my presence or my camera to her, but I do remember she asked me no questions. I made five exposures, working closer and closer from the same direction. I did not ask her name or her history. She told me her age, that she was thirty-two. She said that they had been living on frozen vegetables from the surrounding fields, and birds that the children killed. She had just sold the tires from her car to buy food. There she sat in that lean- to tent with her children huddled around her, and seemed to know that my pictures might help her, and so she helped me. There was a sort of equality about it." "This is the portrait of Pablo Casalas, a master of cello. He used to play in radio so no one knew how he looks, but he was famous. When Yousuf Karsh came to shoot a portrait of him, he captured Pablo from the behind.

When this portrait was on exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Yusuf Karsh was told that an elderly gentleman would come and stand in front of it for many minutes each day. When the curator, by this time full of curiosity, ventured to inquire gingerly, “Sir, why do you stand day after day in front of this portrait?” he was met with a withering glance and the admonition, “Hush, young man, hush - can’t you see, I am listening to the music!”

Nicephore Niepce (March 7, 1765 – July 5, 1833) was a French inventor, now usually credited as the inventor of photography and a pioneer in that field. Niepce developed heliography, a technique he used to create the world's oldest surviving product of a photographic process: a print made from a photoengraved printing plate in 1825.In 1826 or 1827, he used a primitive camera to produce the oldest surviving photograph of a real-world scene. Among Niepce's other inventions was the Pyreolophore, the world's first internal combustion engine, which he conceived, created, and developed with his older brother Claude.
