Rohingya account for 0.02% of crime in : Police Chief

Malaysia’s top police official says the community is linked to a very small share of crime in the country.

Mohd Khalid Ismail said

"only 89 Rohingya individuals were involved in criminal cases from 2024 to date,"

accounting for about 0.02% of total crime. He urged the public to avoid speculation and warned that false claims could trigger tension. He also said laws apply equally to everyone in Malaysia, the Malaysian English daily New Straits Times reported.

He added that enforcement continues through joint operations between maritime agencies and security forces to tackle smuggling and cross-border crime.

According to the UNHCR, Malaysia hosts over 215,000 refugees and asylum seekers, including around 126,000 Rohingya. NGOs have also warned about rising online hate speech and misinformation targeting the community.
