Meet Arif and Jony, two child labourers from Noakhali, Bangladesh. They work in a brickfield in Kachua, Chandpur. When you look beyond the child labour issue itself, their situation begins to resemble a modern form of bonded labour. The brickfield authorities bought their labour from their families for six months for only 40,000 taka each.

Arif and Jony work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., twelve hours a day. They move with an almost machine-like speed. Their job is to keep their heads down and flip rows of dry bricks, repeating the same motion again and again throughout the day. They have no alternative but to continue, and this routine slowly replaces the childhood they should have been living.

In villages, people are building more houses, shops and structures than ever before. Every building requires thousands of bricks, and behind those bricks stand workers like Arif and Jony. Their labour becomes invisible in the rush to build, develop and modernise.
