Haven't been out much since moving back to Tassie, but did manage a quick drive down to my old stomping ground which is Boat Harbour.
The light didn't happen as I would've liked but it was good to be out again.

Tassie doesn't get many storms, so when a few small cells rolled through last night it was a mad dash to grab the gear and see what I could capture.
Taken at Fossil Bluff on the NW Coast
These cells Hit Flinders Island with a bang which is a tad to hard to get to on short notice.

First chase for the season was a bit sketchy as there were bolts dropping all around me, so I had to set up the camera on the passenger seat which limits where you shoot.

I was woken with the sounds of thunder this morning so rushed a coffee in to me & headed out locally to see what was happening.
In my haste I forgot my lightning trigger so had to resort to shooting in continuous mode which is a hassle as you end up chucking 99.9% of the images away.
This was taken looking out over King George Sound & Michaelmas & Breaksea islands with one of the ships waiting to come into port.

It's been ages since I've done any coastal sunset shots, so I thought I'd head out to a spot called Anvil Beach about 45kl out of Albany for a look.
I've been hear a couple of times & it has a really good rock shelf that the waves break into, creating cascades over the shelf. With the surf pumping & the tide to high I couldn't safely get onto the shelf so settled for the relative safety of some nice rock formations just inside.

Albany doesn't get that many storms during summer. So when one is forecast & the modelling looks good I get a tad excited as it means I don't have to travel for hours to chase one.
This is a selection of 3 from Wednesday morning.
It was all quiet except for some high level cloud to cloud flashing going on & then it started to rain down with bolts all around me.
These were taken at what we call the Spark Plug (aptly named) which is only 5 minutes from home & has 360 views.

Finally some storms for Albany!
This shot was taken at the end of a rather long, wet & windy night.
With all my batteries pretty much depleted I had just enough charge to capture this one last shot over the marina & shipping port before heading home.

It's been a quiet 12 months for Aurora activity, so with the Aurora alerts showing the likelihood of some decent activity last night I decided to head out to see if anything eventuated.
The clouds were not playing fair & the South East wind that just wont stop was blowing fairly hard. I headed to the Gap once again mainly for some shelter from the wind. Once I noticed colour showing up on the camera I found this composition on the walkway to the viewing platform & stared to shoot hoping the clouds would disperse.
A soft headlamp was used to light the foreground & this is the best shot I managed with the least amount of cloud.
Cheers

Happy 2021 everyone.
With Western Australia's storm season kicking off finally, when I saw that the Wheatbelt was in for some development, I got my gear ready for what I thought would be a 3 hour drive. So after leaving home at 11pm the 3 hour drive turned into a 5 hour drive as the roos kept interfering with my plans, I arrive with no time to kick back & find a prime vantage point as the storms kicked off like clockwork.
I chased this cell for around 2 hours before another one formed behind me.
I didn't get home till mid afternoon & finally flaked it on the couch at around 10pm, so making it a 36 hour adventure.
Was it worth it you may ask & my reply would be dam straight it was worth it.
I have plans to become more active with this site over the coming year, hopefully posting at least 2 images aweek with a small back story behind each image.
thanks guys & stay safe out there
Dougal 🙏

The Epson International Pano Awards results are out and all the winning images are spectacular as always.
With all that's happening in the world atm & not shooting very much ( issues with my mental health, yep even I suffer from the trusty Black Dawg from time to time), and chronic back pain,
I managed to pick up a Silver with an image from The Stirling Range & a Bronze with an image of a roll cloud at sunset with a bolt of lightning as it was heading for Albany.
So all in all I'm actually pretty amazed with any result at all.
Stay safe & thanks for checking out my page.
