Ten years ago today.
6.6.2016
I just plucked a random 20 pics from the 3500 shots I took from the day.
The swell that became known as “The Day of the Beasts” arrived at South Beach.
For those of us standing in the dark that morning, it felt like watching the ocean rewrite the rules. Absolutely huge masses of water like we have never seen here. Closeout bombies in the middle of the ocean that was a first to see.
The horizon was so lumped with swell, it was unimaginable, the noise of the sea was crazy. Every set seemed numbed the visual sensors, until the next one arrived.
My local beach of 58 years, South Beach was transformed into something I had never seen before, raw, powerful and totally humbling. Such an insane day.
Surfers, photographers, media, and the genral public all gathered wherever they could find a vantage point, all witnessing a day that would become part of local surfing history.
A decade later, the images still bring back the feeling. The anticipation. The adrenaline. The scale.
Some swells are measured in metres, this one hit 17 1/2 metres on the Eden buoy.
The greatest ones are measured in memories.
Today marks 10 years since The Day of the Beasts.
Did you see this day, where were you?
