A couple of people said could I post before and after editing examples of The Aurora Snorealis.

Never one to let people down, here you go.

Photography seems to attract a very special breed of expert. The sort who can look at somebody else's photograph and immediately produce a comprehensive list of everything that's wrong with it. The composition is wrong, the highlights are blown, the shadows are too dark, the horizon is half a degree off, and apparently you should have been standing three feet to the left.

They'll explain, often at considerable length, exactly how you should have taken the photograph and what they would have done differently. So, naturally, curiosity gets the better of you and you have a little look at their own photographic work.

And that's when things get interesting.

Because after delivering a masterclass in photographic criticism, you discover their own portfolio consists almost entirely of photographs that look as though they were taken through a dirty greenhouse window by somebody having a medical emergency.

Now, I'm all for constructive criticism. There are some genuinely talented photographers out there whose opinions I respect enormously, and I'm always happy to learn something. Photography is subjective, and nobody is beyond criticism, myself included.

But there is something wonderfully entertaining about somebody who couldn't photograph a stationary wheelie bin in broad daylight explaining to everybody else where they're going wrong.

The confidence is extraordinary. The talent, rather less so.
