BOOK HIGHLIGHT 📖

POLAROID NOW

Since its invention in 1947, Polaroid photography has captured the intrigue, ingenuity and imagination of millions, whether artist or art-lover. Polaroid Now is an excitingly vibrant collection of Polaroid photography, exploring the history and future of the medium.

Today, we have instant photography at our fingertips, thanks to the smartphones that live in our pockets. With the digital world encroaching more and more on the long legacy of analogue photography, it might seem that we have no need for the robust, blocky Polaroid camera and its cartridge film. Steve Crist’s introductory essay notes the threat of Polaroid’s redundancy via the bankruptcy of the corporation in 2004. Yet, against the odds of rapidly advancing technology, Polaroid persevered. As Crist muses, “photographers – both amateur and professional alike – are now discovering (or rediscovering) a love for all types of analogue photography processes that fans won’t seem let die”. The Polaroid camera is continuously desired and valued for its nostalgic and tactile qualities.

‘Polaroid Now’ proudly displays the sentiment of everlasting creativity through a select collection of Polaroid works by ninety-nine artists, representing the diverse potential of Polaroid photography over the last seven decades. This tribute to Polaroid is an exciting celebration of important Polaroid artists from around the globe, and is a must-have for any photography enthusiast.

BOOK HIGHLIGHT 📖

On the islands of the Strait of Hormuz, near the southern coast of Iran, there is a belief that the winds — generally believed to be harmful — can possess a person, causing them to experience illness or disease. As part of a ritual placating the winds’ harmful effects, the islands’ inhabitants practice a ceremony involving incense, music and movement, in which a hereditary cult leader speaks with the wind through the afflicted patient in order to negotiate its exit.

When artist Hoda Afshar first visited the islands in 2015, she found herself drawn not only to these distinctive customs practiced by its inhabitants but also to its otherworldly landscapes — the strange valleys and statue-like mountains, themselves sculpted by the wind over many millennia. While the exact origins remain unclear, the existence of similar beliefs in many African countries suggests that the cult may have been brought to the south of Iran from southeast Africa through the Arab slave trade. This seldom spoken history became a starting point into an intriguing project for Afshar, who sought to document the story of these winds and the traces they have left on these islands and inhabitants. Through a nuanced approach in which traditional modes of documentary photography are challenged, Speak the Wind is an attempt to picture the unseeable; a visible record of the invisible, seen through the eye of the imagination.

‘SPEAK THE WIND’ exhibition is currently showing at MGA until 26 June.

🐘 In Hinduism and Indian culture the elephant is a sacred animal symbolising power, wisdom, strength, protection of the home, fertility, and general good luck. It is considered the representation or the living incarnation of Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity riding a mouse. It is the most important of all gods who is invoked before any other gods.
