My abs were sore the next day.
That is not a turn of phrase. A decent portion of this session was spent waiting for one or both of us to stop laughing long enough to actually take a photograph.

Fitness is not something she took up.
It is not a comeback and it is not a journey. It has been part of her life the whole way along, and it did not need explaining to me.
So we gave it a proper share of the session. Chalk in the air, the bar across her shoulders, the gear she actually trains in. Not standing in for anything. Just her, doing the thing she does.

Nobody tells you how quickly this bit goes.Actually, everybody tells you. It just doesn't land until it's already gone.

That hoodie has been turning up in my photographs a fair bit lately.
Basecamp is my gym. Lisa started it in Katoomba in 2019 with a clear idea of how she wanted the room to feel — strong, welcoming, and without the ego and intimidation that puts so many people off gyms in the first place.
Seven years on it's still that, which is harder to hold onto than it sounds.
If you've been circling the idea of picking up something heavy and haven't found a room that felt like yours, BaseCamp is it!

She brought the sheep.
Non-negotiable. The sheep was in the studio, the sheep was in the frame, and any suggestion otherwise was not entertained.
Fair enough.

Throwing caution to the wind. More or less literally.
That was the brief for most of the session — big movement, no plan, and considerably more laughing than photographing.

Just over one week old.
Mum, Dad, and a big sister still forming her opinion. All four of them in one frame, which at this age lasts about 15 seconds!

Everyone has a camera in their pocket now. Which is exactly why a real portrait matters more than it used to, not less.

We're surrounded by images — quick ones, filtered ones, increasingly ones that aren't even real. In all that noise, a proper, crafted portrait of your actual family, made by someone who has spent 25 years learning the craft, is a rare and grounding thing.

I photograph what's real. This is who you were, at this time. No fantasy, no fabrication, just your family done properly.

If that's what you're after, message me. It's the only kind of work I do.

Newborns don't keep.

I say that to every pregnant mum who messages me "thinking about maybe booking for after the baby comes." Book now, while you're still pregnant, so I can hold your window.

Those curled-up, sleepy, still-folded-from-the-womb poses only happen for a week or two. It isn't a marketing line, it's biology. After that they uncurl, wake up and become a different, wonderful kind of photograph.

If you're due in the next few months, message me now and we'll pencil in that first fortnight. Your baby is only brand new once.
