For as long as I can remember, I have never seen an Eastern Whip Bird up close but last week whilst wandering through O'Reillys Lamington National Park, I got to see and photograph a Whip Bird and it's chick interacting. A very special moment to end 2025 with.

Fungi, during a winter visit to Walhalla, Victoria last year the mushrooms and fungi were everywhere. This one was nestled in a tree at the foot of the road to the Cemetery.

Last weekend (10th to 12th October 2025) saw Graeme & I volunteer again for another 4WD event but this time with our 4WD Club at the Springs 4x4 Park, hosted by Motor Culture Events.

Although it had been 11 years since we'd last driven the tracks of the Springs, it didn't take us very long to familiarise ourselves, noticing the improvements of the park that Lucas and his Team Bree had done. Graeme & I felt right at home marshalling the event, as we used to do it quite regularly for events run by the previous owners.

There were 5 events for the weekend, starting Friday afternoon with the Flex Test at the Play Pen, located at the front of the property. Vehicles were reversed with one wheel up a ram, which was securely fixed in the ground and against a large tree. Each vehicle was measured from the top of the ramp to the center of the wheel rim.

Khana Cross was more of a speed and precision event on the Gym Khana Track. Navigating your way through the bush, in some places quite tight corners and jump ups at the fastest speed you were prepared to go.

Hill Drags consisted of 2, 4x4 vehicles racing each other up a very steep hill and stop very quickly at the finish. The winner of each race progressed to the next race, till there was only one winner. To say it was a dusty event is an understatement.

Mud Run, this was a very popular spectators' event with people standing on their car roofs to get the best vantage spot to see the vehicles drive through the long muddy track. Only 3 vehicles and their drivers were game enough to give this a go, but with the help of the sn**ch strap to pull them out of the bog, they continued to the end, providing everyone with some exciting video footage. There was also a human mud race, with 3 energetic and confident drivers stripped down to their shorts and ran bare foot through the mud, with a huge belly flop at the end. Now that was funny to watch.

Beer O'Clock Hill. This is a controlled event by the park owner Lucas. To conquer this hill is an achievement in itself and the driver deserves all the bragging rights. It's steep, very steep, with one section near the top at 50 degrees making it very difficult for the vehicle to jump over the 1.5m ledge. Many have made it, many haven't either. I know, I've tried several times over the years.

There was plenty of eat with food and coffee vendors, entertainment each night and give aways. All in all, it was a fun weekend, meeting some wonderful people, and getting some great photos.

Below are some of the photos I took from the weekend

Some photos from the St George Dam Buster 250 held on the 3rd to 5th October this year. The track itself is 10kms long, travelling through and over old farm dams as well as thick scrub and open sandy paddocks.

Over the weekend there were several heats with 8 different class of vehicles competing. Driver's ages ranging from 14 to 80 plus as well as 1 female driver. As the weekend progressed, you could see the confidence of the inexperienced drivers improve, as their speed increased and how they tackled some of the obstacles.

My job during the weekend was Pit Marshall, ensuring that all vehicles listed for the next event were lined up in order and on time. Between heats, I was able to get some photos from around the pit and start/finish line. One of the great things of this event is spectators can sit on top of the dam wall and watch the vehicles over a large area and launch themselves over the dam wall.

As many of you would be aware we travelled out to the Simpson Desert for a few days. The flowers out there were just stunning, from Big Red all the way to the NT Border along the QAA Line and over to the French Line you couldn't see the red sand for flowers. We did see a herd of camels crossing a salt lake as well numerous birds and lizards.

Although it was a short stint out there, we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the desert and look forward to our next opportunity to complete it. Here are some photos i took whilst out there

It's taken me over a decade to find and photograph an Orange Chat, and this week, I finally found a large flock just outside of Birdsville, Queensland. The males were enjoying a dip in the waterhole after a very hot day. Here are just a couple of photos of this amazing experience.

Once you've visited Craigs Hut near Mt Buller, there's an awesome drive via Bindaree Falls which eventually brings you back out onto the main road to Mansfield. Now that's an exciting experience.

This photo was taken behind Bindaree Falls. A short walk from the car park and picnic area. I can only imagine what the Falls are like when its flowing hard.

Our final leg of our Outback Queensland trip saw us at St George, volunteering at the 2025 KMC Wheels St George 399, BFG Goodrich Motorsports Australia Off Road Championships which was held 23 - 24th August 2025.

Hubby Graeme and I spent 4 days mixing with some amazing drivers, navigators and volunteers from South East Queensland Off-Road Racing Association to ensure the weekend was a huge success. Learning some new skills, Graeme was one of the Start Marshalls, whilst I was given the job of Pit Marshall, ensuring the drivers and their cars went through the chute in order.

There were 4 races in total, the first one Saturday morning with the Prologue, consisting of 50 vehicles driving a shortened track of about 14kms to determine the starting order for the next race. The 2nd race in the afternoon was 2 laps, each of 86 kms with 46 vehicles starting. There were a few incidents resulting in recovery, thankfully all occupants walked away without injury. The evening for most was spent rebuilding their vehicles in the hope they could start the next morning.

Sunday was very early with a 7.30am race start and 45 vehicles competing which was amazing considering 2 vehicles had to rebuild their diffs and 1 had to rebuild the front left wheel arm. Many of the drivers/navigators were also the mechanics of their vehicles. Another 2 laps of 86kms each saw a few more vehicles dropping out.

The afternoon, the final race was the National Off-Road Race, where the 25 vehicles entered were trying to qualify for the Finke Races next year. Once again there were some breakdowns but no injuries thankfully. The first 3 place getters of the weekend were
1st - Car 413 - Beau Robinson - Extreme 2WD (2025 Finke Race 2nd place)
2nd - Car 813 - Travis Robinson -Extreme 4WD (2025 Finke Race winner)
3rd - Car 2 - Jared Percival - Pro Buggy

It was a great weekend; we really enjoyed it and have committed to more involvement in the future. Here are some of the photos I managed to get once we got all of the vehicles out on the track.
