Some stories stay with you. Some change the way you see things.
Allowed to Birth is a powerful documentary exploring what birth looks like across cultures and continents, and how modern maternity care has increasingly become shaped by risk, intervention and systems of control.
Through intimate birth stories and global perspectives, the film asks important questions about the way we approach childbirth today. What happens when birth becomes a highly managed medical event? Are our systems always serving mothers and babies well? And what could birth look like when autonomy, trust, physiology and continuity of care are placed back at the centre?
At the heart of the documentary is midwife and educator Kristine Lauria, whose work challenges conventional models of maternity care and offers another perspective on what safe, respectful and empowering birth can look like.
This is not a film just for birth workers. It is for mothers, fathers, families, students, health professionals, and anyone who cares about how we bring babies into the world.
And for one afternoon, we’re bringing it to Townsville.
Come and watch Allowed to Birth on the big screen, then stay for an incredibly special live Q&A with some incredible women in the birth space right here in Townsville, where we’ll continue the conversation right here in our own community.
