These photos are nearly two years old now.

Back then, Adelaide and Keeley were planning a future together.

This Friday, they’ll make it official with a courthouse elopement here in Townsville.

Then later, they’ll stand in Italy surrounded by just 24 of their closest people and celebrate all over again.

I think that’s one of my favourite things about relationships.

The big moments matter, but most of a love story is built in the ordinary days between them. The planning, the waiting, the dreaming, the years that pass while life keeps moving.

These images were taken before any marriage certificates, before the flights were booked, before the final countdown.

But looking at them now, it feels like they already knew exactly where they were headed.

And somehow, this week, I get to photograph the next chapter too.

Photographer confession:

If I waited for families to naturally arrange themselves like this, we'd be here all day.

Most of these photos started with me saying things like:

"Alaric, climb that tree."
"Jared, sit up there."
"Chantel, come over here."
"Everyone spread out a little."

The skill isn't avoiding direction.
The skill is directing people in a way that still feels like them.

When clients tell me, "These don't even feel posed," that's usually when I know I've done my job well.

This gallery makes me think about something I hear a lot:

"The day went so fast."

And it does.

Months (sometimes years) of planning, decisions, emails, fittings, and countdowns.

Then suddenly you're standing in a dress you've imagined wearing, looking across at the person you're about to marry, and before you know it someone is handing you a champagne and telling you it's time for speeches.

What I loved about Thomas & Courteney's day was that they seemed to understand that.

They weren't rushing through it trying to get to the next thing.

They paused.
They read their vows privately.
They lingered during portraits.
They soaked in the hugs.
They laughed with their people.

They were actually there for their wedding.
And I think that's what makes these photos feel the way they do.

Not because they're looking at the camera.
Because they're looking at each other.

A small thing that changed my photography:

Stop asking yourself, “Does this look good?”

Start asking, “Does this feel like them?”

The first question focuses on aesthetics.

The second focuses on storytelling.

One creates a nice image.

The other creates something people recognise themselves in.

I imagine this is what happens when someone says, “Let’s make it feel like us,” and then actually commits to the idea.

Not beige.

Not minimal.

Not playing it safe.

Just bold reds, overflowing flowers, good food, champagne, family, friends and a room full of people excited about what’s next for Sinea & Christian.

These are some of my favourites from the night.

One of my favourite parts of this job is when I stop feeling like “the photographer” and start feeling like a familiar face.

I’ve photographed two weddings in this family already, and next year I’ll be photographing two more.

Louis is one of triplets, so somewhere along the way I seem to have accidentally become the unofficial family photographer.

By the time we got to this session with Louis & Amaya, there wasn’t much awkwardness left. Mostly just jokes, laughing at each other, and everyone making fun of me as usual 🤭

As photographers, we talk a lot about booking weddings.

What we don’t talk about enough is what happens afterwards.

Because sometimes the biggest compliment isn’t a review or a referral.

It’s being invited back again.

And again.

And again.

I can’t wait for wedding number three and four with this crew next year.

Couples: how did you meet your photographer?
Photographers: what’s the highest number of sessions you’ve photographed within one family?

The more I know about what matters to you, the better I can recognise it when it happens in front of me.

That’s why I send a questionnaire.

Not because I need information.

Because I need perspective.
