Spotted this Juvenile black faced monarch today.
They come to the Central Coast NSW to breed from around September to March. It was very vocal and was happy to pose for me.

🌞🌈

A little more colourful than the Australian White Ibis, I love how the low afternoon sun lit up its feathers, revealing all the iridescent colours and illuminating the nictitating membrane.

Female Yellow-tailed black cockatoo
(Zanda funerea)

Did you know? Male yellow-tailed black cockatoos have a pinkish-red eye-ring, while females have a greyish-white one. Males also have larger, more hooked bills, and females tend to have brighter yellow cheek patches.

Common wallaroo
(Osphranter robustus)

The common wallaroo is a stocky macropod found in the rocky hills of the Central Coast NSW hinterland, the arid interior, the Great Dividing Range, and the Kimberley. Preferring rugged terrain, it is most active at dawn and dusk, grazing on grasses and shrubs while sheltering in caves or dense vegetation during the heat of the day. Solitary by nature, it is well adapted to Australia’s diverse landscapes, using its strong limbs to climb steep slopes and evade predators.

Ulysses butterfly
(Papilio ulysses)

The first time I saw one of these, I was driving when a flash of iridescent blue fluttered across the road in front of me. It was a magical sight, as I had heard about the Ulysses butterfly before but never imagined just how bright it was. Native to the tropical rainforests of northern Australia, this stunning butterfly has an iridescent blue wingspan of up to 14 cm, with its vibrant colour created by microscopic scales that reflect light. Being able to photograph one on another occasion made the experience even more special.

Yellow-tailed black cockatoo
(Zanda funerea)

It’s always a pleasure to see birds thriving in their natural environment, like this yellow-tailed black cockatoo enjoying a fresh banksia. It looks so content as it feeds, showcasing its vibrant personality. Fun fact: cockatoos are predominantly left-footed, using their left foot to grasp food while eating.

Amegilla cingulata

The blue-banded bee (Amegilla cingulata) is a vital keystone pollinator in Australia, using its unique “buzz pollination” technique to help fertilise native plants like tomatoes, eggplants, and wildflowers, which many other pollinators can’t access. It nests in soft earth, mudbrick, or even mortar in buildings, playing a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by supporting plant biodiversity and food production.
