I am very proud to be associated with Meals on Wheels and photograph their 70th anniversary at The Queensland Art Gallery last week.

They also launched their new book, Seasoned With Care, which has some superb family favourite recipes in there.

Great night and a lot hard work done behind the scenes to make it look and run so good.

A bit of a moan.

On Saturday night, a professionally framed version of this shot I took at Lamington NP was on sale at a local event.

I was always happy with it; capturing the gap between storm clouds and land, and the textural layering of the late light.

I stood next to a man who was looking at it (he didn’t know I was the photographer) and said, “The sky doesn’t look real. He must have photoshopped it.”

I hadn’t!

It struck me how easy it is to be critical; to dismiss the passion and vision of someone who works hard at their work from the position of blind ignorance and stupidity.

I know we live in a world of artificial reality across many genres; but this blind willingness to dismiss creativity is both personally galling, and socially destructive.

Art relies on an acceptance of someone else’s vision. Criticism relies on a singular viewpoint that requires no talent, no experience and no sense.

Wanted to say a few words about the closing of The Professional Photographers' Association of Queensland. I have been a member for many years, as well as serving as Vice President for a while. Having the strength of this organisation behind me, and the camaraderie was crucial in developing and maintaining my career; especially in its early stages.

Sadly, it's the end of an era - one that lasted nearly 100 years. The world is changing and so is the way the 'professional' aspect of photography is perceived. I could talk a lot here about the past, the challenges, the arrival of AI and the laziness of current practices; but I think it's best to leave it to the excellent words of President and friend, Waschevski on the outgoing web page.

If you have an interest in how the future and past affect the profession we are in; please have a read.

PPAQ exists to support photographers who are serious about both their craft and their business. We’re here to help build a stronger industry - together. Image © Marty Kincel
